wouldnt give you a true oil pressure reading, I would think the pressure would always be high at the filter,,the block will be the best place,,rd

Most Chevrolet engines, not all, have a tap for installing an oil pressure gauge on the block, close to the distributor.

Any where you tap into an oil line will do.  There will be a slightly higher reading at the filter area than there will be further along the system, such as near the distributor.  Keep in mind, this will have a greater effect on the readings when the engine is cold and the oil is thicker.  As it warms, the pressure will be a bit more even due to the flow rate of the oil throught the passages.

You can also use a bit of plumbing and fit another tee outlet to the oil pressure sending unit you have now, keeping a electrical sending unit, and tapping off to the mechanical gauge.

Why do you want both?  Did one fail?  Different car?

There is an oil pressure boss/fitting just above where the filter goes. This is where the sending unit for the gauge goes. If you want to install a mechanical type gauge in the car, then this is where you would put the fitting for the line. If you want to keep the electrical gauge, and just add the mech. gauge, you can get a "T" fitting for the engine block, and use both the electric sender, and the line for the mech gauge.
Are you saying your engine does NOT have a fitting by the oil filter?
The only other places for an oil pressure fitting to be is on the top of the block, around the distributor, OR, at the front of the block, just above the timing cover. Not all Chevy engines will have these, tho.
