Replaced the Alternator today on my own. After I did so the car idles in Park between 400 and 500 rpms. In drive it basically stalls immediately if no gas is given. What did I do wrong?

Scot, only thing I can think is your belt is too tight. It should have about 3/4" of play in the middle.Don't think it will hurt to raise the idle to 600 or so at the carb.

I'll loosen the belt first, sounds like my type of mistake!

Scot check around and make sure you didn't knock off a vacume line somewhere while working on it. If it runs ok with your foot on the gas just turn up the idle screw to where you like it.
Good luck
Good luck
The idle should be 700 rpm in park and 500 rpm in drive. was the car idling ok before you changed the alternator? Like it was mentioned check to see if you have inadvertainly knocked a vacuum hose loose.

I loosened the belt and it starts up with a roar, not with a wimper.
Thanks Guys!
