I'm looking to for opinions on two GM crate engines for my 79 vette.
The first one is the LS 364, it is an LS2 with a LS1 4 barrel intake manifold rates at 440hp
The second is GM'S ZZ383 rated at 425hp.

The advantage of the LS2 is that it is a more Modern Engine but I'm not so sure that dose the Consumer much good. That being said it has a better Cylinder Head design thats why the New Cars can make the Power they do. The disadvantage is that it is not a Bolt in Swap however it has been done and the parts to do it are getting more avalable. I saw One at Fun Fest and it looks real nice sitting in a C3. The advantage of the 383 is that it is a Bolt in replacement for what You have now. If I was to make a Choise I'd stick with the 383 if Your going to go with a Carb and if Your going to Modernise to FI I'd think more about swaping in a LS2 err... LS7.

I agree with Gale Banks 80. The 383 is a great engine with a lot of torque. Get one with the fast burn heads though. Those are great heads plus the 383 swap would be less of a hassle. Either way you will come out ahead but for me I would go with the 383 just for the ease of the install.

I agree wholeheartedly with the others. The LS series engines are great...modern and powerful. The problem is you'll need deep pockets to make it work. I'm sure you'll love it if it's done right, but on a bang for the buck basis, the ZZ383 is the way to go.
