I have a 72 with a mildly warmed up 350. I have 3000 miles on the rebuild, and am thinking about going to Mobil-one. Has anyone used this in an old vette, and can let me know how they liked it? What weight, etc?

Dont waste your time or money. My uncle is a chemical engineer for Goodyear and he say that the only reason you would go to synthetic is to extend the time between changes. I have a 73 with a 350 with a mild temper and DO NOT use synthetic. Im sure you will get varying opinions but normal oil is perfectly fine.

Anything, but Stock and more mods to come!
SSBC Force 10 Brakes, 3.73, TH350, 355 CID, Rack and Pinion, Vette Brakes suspension front and rear.
I spoke with Joe Sherman who won Popular Hot Rodding Magazines Engine Masters Challenge and he says all he uses Is Royal Purple. He told me that he has dyno tested all of the different high dollar lubes and standard ones and says royal purple gives him 10% more power then any other oil and he has never had an engine failure.
I asked abour redline, lucas, amsoil, etc. and he said he has tested them all on the dyno.
Can't get anymore proof then that, especially direct from a professional engine builder.

No disrespect to your uncle, but there are more reasons than oil change scheduals for running synthetic oils(trans fluid/lube and differential lube also). Synthetics reduce friction more than conventional oils, and the benefits can include more hp, more miles per gallon, cooler operating temperatures, and less wear on engine internals.
Do you have have to run synth's for performance engines? No. Some of the meanest, nastiest, gnarly engines to ever come out of detroit had dino oil, but I would bet anything that if they were building SS Impala's with 11:1 327's today, they would run synth's.

I work for GM..............

I read and listened, and then decided to try the synth. I put in mobil one 15-50 and immediately took the car on a 1200 mile road trip ( in two and a half days ) I couldn't tell any great difference. Gas mileage was bad but no different, and engine temp. was about the same, but it was cloudy and cool for most of the time. I will watch it for a while and see if I can tell any long term differences. Thanks to everyone for the info. Tom

I put Mobile 1 in my 72 once and had oil leaking out of the engine in many places. Upon investigation I learned that the oil is just too thin for the gaskets and tolerances that were present in a car of that age. I do not recommend this!

What you'll find is that Mobil1 is so efficient at removing sludge & crud from the engine, if you have sludge blocking what would normally be a leak, guess what,,, you just found a leak that was already there, but just covered up with sludge. Mobil1 is, by far, the best oil on the market. 10w30 should be fine in any GM motor, 15w40 or maybe 20w50 if you're in hot climate. I've been using Mobil1 in everything I've ever owned & have NEVER had a oil related problem in an engine. I'm sure this thread will last a long time but that's my $.02

Vette(s): 1970 COUPE - LS5 454 - AUTO - A/C,PS,PB,TILT. WHITE WITH RED INT. PRISTINE - LIKE THE DAY IT WAS BORN. (Previously owned a White '76. Sold it in 2000.)
I put Mobil 1 in all of my passenger cars and have never had an engine problem in any car that I've owned. However, I tried putting it in in my '76 /350 and the leaks were EVERYWHERE! I dumped it after a week and went back to regular oil and the leaks stopped. I don't dare put it in my 454. It's tight and happy right now.

I put the mobil-one in about 2500 miles back, and am quite happy with it. I rebuilt the engine (all new gaskets) about six months ago, and it doesn't leak a drop. I'm building a new engine and I will probably continue to use it. Thanks for all the input.
