Topic: More Power
in Forum: C3 Engines
i've just got done redoing the inside of my 77,L-48 350, now i would like to try to find a little more power without having to pull out the engine or spend a ton of money, i'm thinking of upgrading with a new set of heads, a new intake & carb, if anyone has any feedback on how this might help i would love to hear, thanks for all your help on my interior remodel also. thanks alot, verneymac77.

I have the ramhorns and 2.5 inch with flowmasters. Pretty open, but still a bit restrictive, by the way, when they went through the crossmember, they had to take it down to 2 inches for that short space. I think the key is that if your manifold, because of height, will only flow a power curve of idle to 5500 rpm, then get a cam that matches that. if you go with an intake with a power curve of 1500 to 6500, then match that cam. My question is how will you fit the horsepower/high rpm intake and beather under the bonnet?
My thinking is if you miss match a high rpm cam with a low torque intake, you lose the benefits of both. No low end torque becuase of the intake, and no high end RPM horsepower because of the cam.
IMy opinion is that if you look at the combinations, there really aren;t that many variables for Chevy small blocks... it's a pretty mature platform that everyone has refined to within miniscule differences. I would say the big difference is between torque and rpms to 5500 and bigger horsepower at higher rpms. Our under hood clearance with a good aircleaner is a defining reality. That, or get the big block hood.
dON`T FORGET ABOUT YOUR REAREND GEARS.
iT`S FAIRLY INEXPENSIVE TO GET OFF THE LINE RESPONSE JUST BY CHANGING YOUR GEAR RATIOS.
The holley kit would work with the ram horns, but headers are always better. I would say the same for any top end engine kit.
There are some really good deals by buying a complete kit. Its been a while since I have checked pricing on they Holley kit, but I belive summit sells it for 1400. Thats a deal by any means for an Aluminum head Package. Others are offering similar kits and you should go with what you feel will work best.
