i've just got done redoing the inside of my 77,L-48 350, now i would like to try to find a little more power without having to pull out the engine or spend a ton of money, i'm thinking of upgrading with a new set of heads, a new intake & carb, if anyone has any feedback on how this might help i would love to hear, thanks for all your help on my interior remodel also.  thanks alot, verneymac77.

don't forget camshaft, headers, mufflers and ign., if you change one thing, more than likely you will have to change another thing to get any performance out of the first change, so if performance is what you want and money is not a problem and the bottom end is good, figure on changing every thing from the block's deck up including timing chain and gears, let the money and good times roll anips38515.4566203704

We need to know what you have.  Headers, Ignition, Intake, that stuff.  And the kind of money.  I agree that coordination of heads goes hand in hand with cam.  Anything benefits from headers, but I hate em.

If its stock, then I would keep it simple look at a top end kit.  Many companies offer them complete with everything.  This takes the guess work out of matching up parts.

how well would a holley systemax kit work with the origional rams horns manifolds, if you put a 2.5 inch exhaust after it?

I have the ramhorns and 2.5 inch with flowmasters.  Pretty open, but still a bit restrictive, by the way, when they went through the crossmember, they had to take it down to 2 inches for that short space.  I think the key is that if your manifold, because of height, will only flow a power curve of idle to 5500 rpm, then get a cam that matches that.  if you go with an intake with a power curve of 1500 to 6500, then match that cam.  My question is how will you fit the horsepower/high rpm intake and beather under the bonnet?

My thinking is if you miss match a high rpm cam with a low torque intake, you lose the benefits of both.  No low end torque becuase of the intake, and no high end RPM horsepower because of the cam.

IMy opinion is that if you look at the combinations, there really aren;t that many variables for Chevy small blocks... it's a pretty mature platform that everyone has refined to within miniscule differences.  I would say the big difference is between torque and rpms to 5500 and bigger horsepower at higher rpms.  Our under hood clearance with a good aircleaner is a defining reality.  That, or get the big block hood.

Edelbrock makes an aluminum version of the chevy vortec head called the E-TEC.  They have a matching air gap performer rpm manifold, carburator and camshaft.  The aluminum heads will help with temperature so your compression can be a little high (10.5-1) and still not cause any detonation on pump gas.  Throw in a good ignition system like the MSD billet distributor and 6al MSD Box and coil setup and you should have a good performing, reliable engine that runs great on pump gas.  Total cost will be in the neighborhood of $2000.00.  Good luck, let us know what you end up with.

The big thing to remember is getting more air and fuel mixture in, you then have to get it all out once it has gone bang. My base 350 now has Holley 600CFM with a Edelbrock Performer intake (they will fit under a standard hood as long as you use a low profile air cleaner and not the stock one.  With the Holley, I wouldn't use a stock air cleaner anyway.  On the other side of the heads I've got headers with high flow mufflers.  Being a '71 I don't have to worry about Cats and it had a true dual system to start with.  I haven't yet had the cam out or seen what head work was done prior to me getting the car but on the dyno I'm pumping out around 360HP when the original base engine was only rated at 270.

The holley kit would work with the ram horns, but headers are always better.  I would say the same for any top end engine kit.

There are some really good deals by buying a complete kit.  Its been a while since I have checked pricing on they Holley kit, but I belive summit sells it for 1400.  Thats a deal by any means for an Aluminum head Package.  Others are offering similar kits and you should go with what you feel will work best.
