thanks sarge i wasn't sure what year gm changed to that system , guess i could have looked it up in my black book

Here is the answer to my problem. When i put the 4 screws in to hold down the coil they went through the inside of the distributor cap, just enough to draw the spark. When the # 4 plug fired it also grounded itself to the coil. So I ground down the screws and purchased a new cap- no more miss. So I spent the whole summer driving uninspected with an engine miss.
I found out sometimes you can screw to long.
