I just bought a 71 vette to compliment my honda s2000....
yes, they do make a strange pair:) I've decided that the l48 just doesn't have the punch i want, not nearly. I'm not that heavy on the pedal, but i do like to go to the strip. I've allocated roughly 600 for exhaust work, which consist of dynomax headers, flowmaster muffles, stock tips, and all new piping, probably 2.5''. My question is what to do with the 3000 i've allocated for the engine. Right now i'm thinking i'll just do what my local engine shop told me to do, and go with the edelbrock performer RPM package, from the heads, to cams, intake, carb incl. in the power pack., and a K&N air filter. I figure that with some billet allum. pieces will come to about 3k installed. It comes down to this, will that setup deliver the strongest, most quanitative, and most reliable HP for my money? Ok..... breath..... think...... respond

The Edelbrock Performer RPM package is a good way to go. All the hard work (dyno testing and matching is all done). I'm sure other manufacturers have similar packages, but nothing wrong with Edelbrock...as good as any, better than most.
It all comes from what you want out of the car. On my '78 L82, I was primarily concerned with increasing driveability and responsiveness, not max power. I had my stock Q-Jet professionally rebuilt, installed an Edelbrock Performer intake, removed the emissions equipment, including the catalytic converter, and installed a true dual exhaust with low restriction mufflers. The car ran well before, but goes like crazy now, and I wasn't even trying to maximize power potential. For some reason, the engine even runs 10-15 degrees cooler now.
The only issue I've found, is the carb was rebuilt and calibrated to stock specs, and since a prior owner put a bigger cam in the engine, the carb runs lean at idle, so bigger jets are required and is being taken care of now. With the Edelbrock package, those issues are addressed ahead of time, so you should be able to bolt it all on and go!
Best of luck.

Thnx for the replies guys. Its making me feel more comfortable about what i'm doing. I went by the engine shop and the final decision was made on whats going to be put in. For 2800, i'm getting a 14'' k&n air filter with the top, RPM perf. intake and cam, holley 650 carb, and vortech heads custom tuned. I was told the vortech heads would flow twice as nicely as the alluminum rpm perf. from edelbrock, and they cost 250 less as they arn't alluminum. This also gets me the allum. valve covers, timing chain cover, spark plugs, wires, etc. I'll let you guys know how it go's and what the dyno results are when i dyno it.
