You need to get a chip especially for your 82. One out of another vet will not work !!

hypertech makes replacement "performance" chips but Im not sure they do more than tweak the timing a bit. If you have difficulty locating a chip you could consider one of the hypertechs. The folks HERE may be able to help. The crossfire injection vault is a good forum to belong to if you have a crossfire in any case.

Like dskopp said, you will need a chip from an 82; you can also use one from an 84 as they are not to much different. I've heard the Hypertech chips are a waste of money, but I have never use one. If you Cannot find an OEM chip then that may be the way to go. Do check over on the CFIV forum for more info.http://www.crossfire.homeip.net
Are you sure it is only the chip that is bad? These ECM's are well known to burn out and partially or completely stop functioning??

Why is it that you need a new PROM(chip) anyway? It's pretty hard to damage one unless someone's been welding on it, or it has been setting in the desert sun for weeks. UV rays will erase the chip memory, but it takes a pretty heavy dose to do it.
I have a HyperTech prom in my '85, and have used them in other vehicles also. They really only change the fuel/ignition mapping at full throttle...

Sorry for the lack of info was very frustrated with my vette. Heres the short story.....
Went to start the vette one day and it was hard to start.... pumped the gas (DONT EVER DO ).
flooded the vette. Let it set for two days and would start but MAJOR SMOKE out of exhaust.... fumagated neighbor hood. LOL tried to start vette and wouldnt run for more than 5 seconds.
Changed plugs and wires as long as I had then thinking that would help.....didnt.
Had ordered the hyperchip for it and decided to install it. put it in and started vette and runs well ...
only problem with vette is the high idle...1500 rpm.
So thought original prom was messed up.
Any help appreciated..... Dan

Have you driven the car since you installed the new PROM? Once the computer is disconnected from power, it must "relearn" its basic operations by being driven at a speed of over 35 mph for a few miles. This is the first thing I would try.
Did the engine idle "OK" before you installed the new PROM? Check to make sure when you ran new wires that nothing is touching the throttle linkage between the two throttle bodies that would prevent it from returning to the at rest position. If nothing is touching the linkage, try to move it by hand further toward the at rest position to see if the idle goes down to normal. Also check to make sure that any unused vacuum ports on the base of both throttle bodies are plugged.
The high idle could be caused by a variety of other things but the most common two would be either a vacuum leak, at 1500rpm a pretty big vacuum leak or problem with one or both of the Idle Air Controllers (IAC). It is very unlikely that both IACs would go bad at the same time but you will need to test both to see if this is the problem. Testing and cleaning procedures for the IACs is HERE . I strongly recommend you join the Crossfire Injection Vault , its free, There is more crossfire resources there than anywhere else on the net that Im aware of.

"Pumping the gas" on an injected engine will not dump fuel into the engine, as there is no "accelerator" pump. The fuel is dumped in by the injectors(controlled by the ECM and the signals it receives from several sensors) , so no matter how much you pump the pedal, that doesn't really do anything. Perhaps you have an injector that is leaking, and that could flood the engine while cranking, or there is a/was a problem with the prom that kept the ignition from firing, but allowed the injectors to fire.

What Phill said is correct. I had a problem with my ECM, very rarely does the PROM go out. I had my carb overhauled and everything is fine now. Keep us posted!
