Hi Mark;

Just finishing a cam replacement in my 72.  I pulled the hood, fan, shroud, radiator, A/C condenser , w/p, etc. Had plenty of room.  No need to yank engine.

Yep no need to pull the engine out, All you got to do is clear away the stuff Ken said. also you need to take off the intake manifold to get at the lifters. Before you do that, pull the timing chain cover off and rotate the engine over to line up the two dots on the timing chain then mark where the distributor rotor is at and then pull it out. that way you can just drop it back in with it as close to the original timing before you started. That way it will fire back up with out too much trouble. Then follow the cam break in procedure assuming its a flat tappet cam.Tumarr38470.4358449074

Big job, Somethimes I think it would be easier to just pull the engine.  Just plan on giving yourself a solid week of week-nights to do the job.

Done forget the the carb, vacuum hoses, distributor, spark plugs and plug wires.

It is a big job, especially for one person to do. I pulled my cam before on my vette in one day but I had pressed two of my younger brothers to be my slaves...err assistants to help me out. You may want to bribe a friend with beer to come over a few evenings to help you out so things go quicker.

I pulled mine just to change the heads. Somethings are better to do on an engine stand. Yes it can be done still in the car but it doest take that much more to pull the engine so why bust your back. Those heads suck anyway so if your going to change the cam I suggest you consider that as well.
