Help. Recap of continuing story. Wife took her 82 CE in for alignment. GM dealer replaced entire front end. Dealer said car wouldn't start afterward. Said battery was "swollen". Replaced battery. Drove home. Next day wouldn't start. Towed back in. Dealer said alternator bad. Replaced alternator. Towed home (couldn't get off work so dealer delivered). Next day, air sound produced when light switch on. You guys suggested bad switch. Ordered switch, replaced (lots of fun there - 2 hours). Lights work. THANKS!! Started car. Idle rough. Drove car. Decreased power and vibrates, no, actually shakes when accelerates, like cylinder down or timing issue. Drove home. Popped hood. Clicking sound from right rear motor. Parked. Shut off. Burning smell from left rear wheel well. GREAT.
This car NEVER gave us a bit of trouble until now. Have we finally been bitten by the C3 bug?
P.S. This car is driven every weekend and only has 50,000 miles.
P.S.S. Thanks again for everyone's help on the light switch!!!!!!!

,Not sure about the rough running problem, but the burning smell from the left rear wheel could possibly be a caliper hanging up I.E. stuck in the entended position ,I had this happen on a front caliper, replaced with new one,no more problem

The rough running could be a vacuum issue. You may not have gotten all the vacuum lines reconnected correctly when you swapped out the light switch or inadvertently dislodged a different line during the take-apart or put-back-together phase of that project.
I agree with Ron on the possiblity of a rear brake issue. But also consider the parking brake. It is a drum setup inside the rear rotor and if you rarely use it they have a tendency to rust up. An unintentional tug on the parking brake lever could set the brake and the mechanism may not have released even though the handle gives the appearance that it did.
When I removed the switch I replaced the new one in opposite order. The switch worked and the "air rushing" noise went away. Could I have disrupted something else under the dash. All the other vacuum lines seemed to be intact. Also I did raise the left back end and tried to spin the wheel and tried to shake it side to side thinking I had a bad bearing.
Thanks in advance!!!!!

Whew...... I wish I had some idea as to your problem but it is interesting that it all started when the dealer worked on the front end. Of course, I'm not insinuating that the dealer screwed anything up, I learned long ago that they dont do that, yeah right. The clicking sound from the engine sounds ominous but I wonder if the dealers tech. could have pulled any vacuum lines loose in the front (vacuum can, relays, etc) while they were working on the front end.
Yeah, I hate to point the finger, BUT it is very coincidental. Would the vacuum line breach from filter to the manifold cause a rough idle? I am also worried about the click/knock. Last time I heard something similar it was a rear main going bad in a Jeep. However, that would not cause the rough idle.
Thanks for the thoughts.

Yes it could (based on my limited knowledge base). Any vacuum leak would add to the rough running and lack of acceleration. There could also be vacuum leaks around the bases of the throttle bodies. Or the hose to the MAP sensor failed. Lots of possibilities for vacuum leaks and anyone of them would confuse the computer.

If the engine is shaking that bad, it has to be a really big vacuum leak...one that would be easy to hear/locate.
And yes, believe it or not, the problem most likely originated at the dealership. Chances are, the "tech" "had" to drive the car to verify the alignment. And...he "had" to see how hard it would run at full throttle.
I'd be looking/listening for a large vacuum leak. If I couldn't find one, and there just happens to be a bent push-rod all of the sudden, causing the rough running AND the ticking noise...I think I'd be paying the dealership a visit, and demanding an explanation. Of course, they're gonna say "We didn't do nuthin to your car"...
A couple of years ago, I took the '74 to the Chebby dealer down the road from the shop for an alignment, because I didn't have the time to trailer it to the only other place I wanted to do it.
When I picked it up, a young punk drove it around to the front, got out, and said..."Eeez a nice car, Meeester...eez berry fas"
I left the service manager with a few choice words concerning that...Adams' Apple 2007-10-08 19:26:11
