MSD makes a distributor with a tach drive that's a drop in installation. The resto houses like Eckler's, Corvette Central and others sell an HEI distributor that has tach drive also.

The least expensive way is to install a points to electronic ingnition conversion kit in your present distributor...Pertronix, Accel, Mallory and Crane all sell them, and they're pretty much all the same cost. Pertronix is probably the most popular, but I'm sure they're all good quality and good performance.

I have the Pertronix conversion kit thing.  It took me about 2 hours, but it really shoud have taken 1.  You should pay less than 150$ for this (I paid 90$).

This will get rid of the points and keep your original distributor.  If the tip (bottom of it) looks good, the hammers and springs are in good condition, then keep yours and put a conversion kit.

Disconnect battery, mark your distributor, remove it, remove the point, attach the new magnet and pass the wire through (that was the tricky part for me; trying to not break the bushing since it was a little dry.), put dist. back on the mark, attach wire at coil and fire it up (after you reconnect the battery of course).
