Thanks for the tips Bob. Maybe I'll go with it and keep my fingers crossed.

[QUOTE=LukesVette]Dave,
Any sort of torquing movement from the motor could cause it to hit the steering box. You could dimple the headers or.......
do like I did - upgrade to a rack and pinion and eliminate the steering box altogether!!

Ditto! From the picture on the steering box it didn't look too bad a lot better than mine did. I have a tight fit on my duals going through the crossmember and they are jammed up against the top in the holes and it seems to be ok for now. Even if I set my engine to idle really low and it's shaking like a crack baby it really dosen't move that much.

I have the glass packs, they are kinda middle of the road as far as loudness goes. I don't mind a loud exhaust. Maybe I'll change my mind, we'll see

I HAVE THE HOOKER FREE FLOW MUFFLERS, THEY CACKLE LIKE IT BELONGS ON THE DRAG STRIP. i LOVE IT. STEP ON IT AND THE MUSIC GETS LOUDER. SAVES ME THE MONEY FIXING THE STOCK FM RADIO.
Looks to be some pretty close clearances. Hope the heat doesn't cause any problem with the sterring box.

Dropping the right side to gain a bit may cause issues with the pulley. Any chance to shim the left side to raise it a tad? That may tip the engine enough to get you a little more space on the rightside.
We thought about doing that when the problem with the long tube headers cropped up on "BIGBRRD". But tipping the engine a little was going to cause problems on top with the shaker hood scoop so we switched to the shorty headers instead.

Norsky is on the right track...
From looking at the pics, it appears the driver side collector sits farther out from the body than the pass side...is that an optical illusion, or is it really that way? If it is, then they messed up building the set. Perhaps they didn't take into consideration the engine being off-set to the pass side a little? Looks like the pass side tubes are already touching the frame. It is possible, as Norsky suggests, that you could raise the driver side up a bit, which may also pull the ds collector in closer to the body, as well as give a little more clearance for the tube/frame on the pass side.
The tubes are quite tight around the steering gearbox...might I suggest some sort of heat shield there? I have seen other installations that they used a sheet of aluminuminum around the gearbox, to combat what will obviously be a major increase in heat around the box. Better safe than sorry...
Engine torque is gonna pull up on the driver side, and push down on the pass side. So, engine torque will actually pull the tubes away from the gearbox, and open up the small gap between the tubes and the frame on the pass side.

I just got back from the shop. I told him to go ahead and assemble it and I'll see how mounting the side tubes affects everything. Every Hooker sidepipe setup I've seen has the same clearance around the steering box. I can make an aluminum shield if needed. I'll give you all the details after were done .
Thanks for all you're help,

I just got an e-mail from the guy that bought my old engine, he has it in his '76 and it's up & running. It needed a timing set, oil pump, valve seals, and a cam (3 lobes were shoot). He says it's running great, no smoke.

The only problem is that he has it running before I have my new one running
. I hope in the next week or two it will be done. You guys must be tired of hearing about it by now
. Thanks again for your help and moral support, can't beat this place
