Thank you for contacting Castrol.
The latest API SM/ILSAC GF-4 category calls for reduced Zinc and Phosphorus levels to allow extended catalyst life in current model vehicles. There appear to be field issues associated with the SM/GF-4 oil's level of anti-wear in the classic car engines known as flat tappet cam engines. The current late model passenger car engines are not flat tappet cam engines and have no reported field issues related to the level of anti-wear chemistry in the SM/GF-4 oils.
To clarify, in general, ZDDP levels have been reduced a small amount in the current category engine oils (API SM/ILSAC GF-4) in compliance with industry regulations that set maximum levels of
As indicated on our product packaging, the current engine oil category API SM/ILSAC GF-4 is fully backwards compatible or ‘back serviceable’ and has been extensively tested. Valve train issues are not anticipated with the use of modern engine oil in older cars of OEM stock configuration. In fact, current SM/GF-4 engine oils are subjected to testing that is far more intensive than engine oils of previous API/ILSAC categories.
Castrol is aware of articles in enthusiast magazines and web-sites, as well as after-market parts manufacturer discussions concerning GF-4 engine oils and cam-shaft durability issues in older performance vehicles. Some consumers suspect the lower level of ZDDP in GF-4 oils may be causing these failures. Castrol is currently investigating this issue.
For those consumers that wish not to use a GF-4 oil in these vehicles, Castrol does offer the following products that contain Zinc at a level that is typical of the Zinc level found in oils (API SG) marketed during the "muscle car" era of time.
The following Castrol products have Zinc levels that are typical of API SG oil:
1. Castrol Syntec 20W-50 (NEWLY FORMULATED classic oil formula – see link to website below for information on our new 20W-50 product)
2. Castrol Syntec 5W-40

i HAVE BEEN USING CASTROL GTX 10W 30W IN MY HP 69 CORVETTE. RECENTLY I HAVE HEARD THAT TODAYS FORMULAS ARE NOT THE SAME AS YEARS AGO AND THAT THERE ARE LESS ADDITIVES THAT AID AGAINST FRICTION. ALTHOUGH I CHANGE MY OIL AT 1000 MILES, THIS CONCERNS ME AS I HAVE SPENT ALOT OF $$$ BUILDING MY ENGINE AND WANT TO USE THE BEST LUBRICANTS TO PROTECT IT. PLEASE ADVISE AS TO THE ACCURACY OF THIS INFORMATION. BOB |

It does say they are "investigating" the claims of newer oils not being wear-friendly in the older engines, so...there appears to be at least some truth in the rumors.
In the meantime, why take a chance? Use the additives you can buy, or the Rotella or Delo diesel oils...better safe than sorry.

Thanks for getting the info from Castrol, Bob!
