I run Castrol GTX in many of my vehicles too. Have been running it for many years
Those wheels look nice on that car! What are they?  My 78 is the same color.  They'd look nice on mine too.

Thanks.

I have been doing some study of this with the engine oils. Many Synthetic olis have the higher levels of ZDDP that is required for older engines, Mobil1 racing oils have 1200PPM of ZDDP. I am not going to run synthetic myself, because of leaking issues with older cork style gaskets.

Are ZDDP levels and issuue after the engine is broken in? No one that I can find is sure, but HAVING the extra additive in the oil sure doesn't hurt, and it is my choice.

Levels in oils for older, high compression, and high valve spring pressure engines REQUIRE 1200ppm ZDDP from all the info I have read. Castrol, Quaker State, and Penzoil have removed ALL hte ZDDP from their conventional oils. Shell Rotella still has the ZDDP, but at lower levels (600-800ppm). The word on the street is that diesels will also require cats in the future, so the levels there may drop as well. (ZDDP levels above 1400 ppm may cause other engine issues, so be careful with additives).

The ONLY readily availible, conventional oil I have found that still have 1200ppm of ZDDP is Valvoline ZR-1 Racing oil. According the their web-site there are no plans to change the levels at this time. You can buy it at places like Checker and Autozone for about $4.25 a quart.

The jury is still out about needing the high ZDDP levels at all, but I for one, don't plan on taking that kind of chance with my engines. As long as the oil is availible, I will use it.

well gentemen everyone is right about the flat tappet problem, but fact is most conv. oil if not all now have none or very little ZDDP that includes Rotella, Castrol, Dello, etc, soon all BIG Rigs will have to run some type of oxy sensor, there goes the zddp, what I did was buy a six pack of stuff called "ZDDPLUS, $9+ a bottle case price, one 4oz bottle will treat 5qt's of your favorite oil and bring your oil spec's back to "SF" levels. Go to www.zddplus.com  it will answer all your questions.

The two biggest problem I have with all the additives is:

1) You really never know the mix, while they say 1200ppm is ideal, 1400ppm can cause damage to the engine over time.

2) There is no chemical bond with the additive to the oil. When the oils are manufactured with the ZDDP, they are chemically bonded.

Thanks, it took me quite a while to figure out what I wanted. They are American Racing Torque Thrust II 16". I got them from Tire Rack with the tires mounted.

now back to oil. Emission equipment is only going to get worse. The next Tier engine change we go through here at work will require some expensive regen systems.

Crap, and I just bought 4 bottles of ZDDPlus on ebay.  Thanks you Castrol for coming out with a high zinc oil.  I'm using Royal Purple and ZDDPlus until I run out of the zinc additive, then I'll switch to the Syntec.  I have no issues with my cork gaskets leaking synthetic oil.  I've read on BITOG and elsewhere that diesel oil has too much detergent for gas engines.

This is so confusing but Castrol seems to have solved the problem.

I use Castrol Syntec in all my cars, my sister-in-law is a big shot at Castrol, and she'd kill me if I used anything else. Actually I would use it anyway, I like it.

Well, you all got my attention with all this.

I never used a synthetic oil in mine since I've owned it. I've put about 8k. on the odometer since. (Total of 80k. on the odo.)
Would introducing at synthetic oil now cause any problems?
I wouldn't mind doing the right thing with the ZDDP for the motor, but the synthetic oil worries me a bit.

The other day I recieved the new NCRS Driveline, there is a company in the mid-West that is making and selling what they call "classic car" oil. The ad says it has the correct level of additives (ZDDP, detergents, etc) for older, high HP engines. I would check the company out pretty carefully before I bought anything, but at least there is someone out there making some changes. $42 a case.

Whew! There's enough post on different forums and articles that have been written on the subject of zddp and oils to make your head swim! After readin a couple hundred or so, I've decided when my new engine (cam) is broken in, I'll use a good 30w with either GM's EOS or the ZDDPlus. Afterwards, either stay with ZDDPlus  or  Valvoline VR-1 30w or 40w until such time I can switch to Amsoil Syn.  I run their syn. diesel in my '02 Duramax now and am quite happy with it. (except the price). They do have some good oils for us flat tappers. I will definitely be using them.
Here's a reply I received from them about the flat tappet cam problem.
http://www.amsoil.com/dealer/techservicesbu lletin/. I think their oil and filters are worth the extra money in the long run to protect my investment. Thumbs%20Up
