Had to move the distributor a notch so I could set the timing but everything seems to be fine now in that department and starts right up. Sometimes it seems I get some smoke and sometimes not. I guess I'll run it from time to time and see how it does. In looking at my invoice from the engine machine shop, I don't see any mention of valve seals. I see valve job for $58 and resurface head for $34 for each head. I think I asked and they said I didn't need it. I'm guessing I should have had it done anyway. Can't decide to go ahead and let it go, and put the body back on and complete or pull the heads and have valve seals put in if they hadn't during the valve job. Not something I would want to do after completing a restoration. Any comments on how long a new engine break in before being concerned about valve seals? Thanks, David

David.... I don't get it... they said you didn't need it....I would ask them again if they put new valve seals in...I would be ticked if they didn't put new ones in on a new valve job.... they should have installed the valve seals at the machine shop when they did the valve job, that is standard. I don't know what to say...other than the valve seals should be done...and they should have done them!
Valve seals don't have much need for break in.
The valve seals can be change without removing the heads with a valve compressor tool.
Glad you are up and running
John
It would be easier to put them in with the engine out of the car. They are not that hard to do. Yes, call and ask them. But I have to say it would have been stupid to work on the heads and not put new seals in place.
