Vette(s): 1978 vette with an 80-82 stlye rear end molded in. BW six speed & an L82... for now. Lowered with VBP springs and bilsteins. Polished torq thrust wheels. New paint, audio system, aluminum radiator... Flowmaster and extreme flow exhaust components.
Right now I have a stock L82, it has 90,000 miles on it and it runs fine. But... I'm sick of it! I need more power, now! I have a 6 speed out of a camaro so I should be good with an engine putting out around 450ft lbs. I've found a few small long block crate motors for $3,200 - $3,600 with about 440 HP/ 430 ft lbs. - 480 HP/ 470 ft lbs. I will have to smog this car twice more, once this April and then finally two years after that. I plan on using hooker sidepipes with the new motor and then switching the old exhaust back on whenever I have to smog. I've come to realize that I don't have the patience to wait for the car to be somg exempt. So my question to you... If I use the stock style exhaust (Y pipes, flowmasters, and an x-treme flow cat), the somg tubes and AIR pump, along with the factory intake manifold and carb on the new motor, will I be able to pass smog?!?! My LS1 camaro friend is under the impression that these 400-500 HP motors will burn cleaner than my stock engine. Is he right? How can I be sure before I spend thousands of dollars?!?! Or is there any clever way to cheat smog? Know any CA smog stations friendly with Benjamin Frankiln?

ive heard that there are fule additives that make your car run like crap.. but will help you pass emissions..
never tried one though.
never tried one though.
The additives are primarly methol alcholol. In other words, lots a special stuff at 5 or 6 bucks a bottle, or do the same thing with methol dry gas. During combustion, it supplies a large quanity of oxygen, which causes cleaner burning and reduces Carbon Monxide and Hydrocarbons. It will do nothing for NOx.
This also lower the octane rating of your fuel. If you have alcholol fuel, you are already using some of this. You can up to as high as 15 percent. No more.

Just curious since I think you live in the "Republic of California" ... !!!
Didn't California just, in the last month or so, abolish the rolling exemption for emission testing? meaning that any 1976 or newer car will have to undergo emission testing until the end of time...????
Not that I ever plan to move to California but since so damn many states are now following the California Carb
regulations I just want to know what to expect when the
local hug a tree group starts pushing for zero emissions
on Lawnmowers as well as old cars...

Actually, lawn mowers, chainsaws, 4 wheelers, etc now have to meet emissions standards when they are manufactured. Aren't you glad you don't need to run them through e-check?
Ken,
If they were ever to start e checking lawnmowers and weedwackers, I'm going to get a damn goat!

I've heard roomers of that but nothing for sure. Last time I went with a buddy to get his car smogged I talked to the tester (smog only station) and he said that the rolling exemption is still in effect. This was about 4 months ago. Also I just checked the DMV website and they still have the 30 year exemption rule posted. See link http://www.dmv.org/ca-california/motor-vehicles-smog-check.php Anyways, I liked what I heard about the alcohol addative. Sounds good, where can I pick this stuff up?
Also, my buddy suggested that I convert my car to natural gas, which will make my car smog exempt, and then throw in a crazy small block. Should I look into this? Or is it a dumb idea?

I understand...
BUT to be honest I know I put at least 60 hours sitting on my Lawn Tractor this summer... and I never came close to driving any of my Corvettes that many hours...
I actually think that I put more pollution in the air cutting the grass then I did driving my cars.. especially since my Tractor is a good 25 years old... As for weed eaters,....hell If I can't trim close enough with the tractor I mulch the area.. With leaf blowers I gave up on my Gasoline one (the wife can't use it because it is too heavy and I sure do not want that chore, so I bought her a battery opperated one with a few spare batteries... nothing too good for the wife...especially if it takes me out of the picture... lol

Hey Sarge, goats have emissions too! Comes out right under their tail!
You can get the alcohol in the form of methal Dry Gas, (not ISO) or at the local drug store.

Anything, but Stock and more mods to come!
SSBC Force 10 Brakes, 3.73, TH350, 355 CID, Rack and Pinion, Vette Brakes suspension front and rear.
I deal with this question a lot. Here is the deal, if its 50 state legal and has a CARB # they can't say anything about the part on the car during visual. This does not mean they will let you pass emissions. The motor still has to do that on its own account.
We sell many parts that have all the emission hook ups, but don't have a CARB #. This mean they are typically 49 State legal. The states may or may not do a visual, may or may not require an exempt number, but are really looking to make sure everything is still hooked up. Its still up to you to make sure it will pass the emissions test.
Then there is the offroad only parts. This means they are to be run as they come out of the box and are considered not legal for use on the streets. A lot of states don't give a crap about these and wouldn't recognized them if they bit them on the butt.
So if you are in cali, then it better have a number and it better have everything hooked up.
I did an article recently with Super Chevy magazine that should be out now that was on a 383 stroker engine that used all 50-state legal parts. Meaning they had CARB #'s. It made kick butt power. Somthing like 450 HP.
