Most of you guys ( and gals ) may not remember me, but I used to spend a great deal of time in the forum.  A couple years ago I posted that I was replacing my motor, the original 427 with a slightly modified 454.  After much long and arduous adventures, including a trip to the local courthouse, the new motor is finally in the car and running great.

I designed this motor to be a 'mild' street driver as I put on 3 or 4 thousand miles a year on the car.  The short block is a 454 bored .030 over standard using Speed Pro hyper eutectic pistons.  The compression ratio is right at what the factory gave the car, 10.25:1.  The heads are the factory oval port iron heads but have been ported and polished to a "super mod" state, with a 3 angle valve job.  Springs and rockers replaced to accomodate cam lift.  The cam is a special grind Predator cam with the following specs:  234/244 @ .050, lift with a 1.7 rocker is 610/634 with a 112 lobe seperation.  For those who the numbers don't mean anything, it is mild and keeps my red line at 5600-5800.  The intake is now an Edelbrock 3550 fuel injection unit which was actually the easiest part of the entire build to do.

I backed up the motor with a Tremec (Keisler) TKO 550 5 speed.

I had the motor dyno tuned on a chassis dyno and when all was said and done, I was kinda unimpressed.  Max HP ended up at 380 and torque was 403.  Remember those number are at the wheels.  Really shows just how mild the cam is!!

The old 427 gave me right at 15 miles per gallon on the highway.  I hope between the fuel injection and the .68 over drive to get around 20 or better on the highway now.

The car is a lot of fun to drive.  The only draw-back is I can not put the gas pedal to the floor in first or second gear and hope to get any traction   If I really try to get on it, my 60 foot time will probably be around a minute and a quarter with street tires .

Oh well, at least I still have 11 inches of vacuum and all my accessories still work.  Next stop, an electric vacuum pump and a MUCH larger cam  .

I was hoping to drive to Pidgeon Forge with Adam, but life got in the way of those plans.  Maybe I can drive the car to next year's meeting.  BTW, it does run on pump gas and will even run fine with a mixture of 89 and 93 octane.  No, I normally run straight 93 octane but sometimes ya just have to experiment  .

Thanks for listening.

Glenn

Good to see you back Glenn!

I remember you from the 1st C3VR meeting in Hershey, PA. Glad you finally got the motor ordeal done. That guy sounded like a real a$$ to do business with. To bad you can't make it to PF this year. Maybe we'll see you next year.

Let's see some pics!
