Lee. Welcome . . . and fear not.
The answer is closer than you think. Think of it this way - if the car had no dash or firewall, you would be staring at the block number from the driver's seat. Block casting number is on top of the block, driver's side rear.
Wipe the grime off the block just behind the intake. Your answer lies there.
It's alot like an Indiana Jones treaure hunt . . . except nobody's tryin' to kill ya!

Bad news, Lee. What you've found so far means NOT original. Try not to sweat it. You ain't the first - and you won't be the last.
"F" is the dead giveaway in this case. That first letter is the "Engine Assembly Plant Code." All C3 Corvette engines were assembled at Flint, Michigan ("V") or Tonawanda, New York ("T"). The "F" denotes the Flint Motor Facility which produced GM engines, but never produced Vette mills.
"03" = third month (March)
"28" = 28th day
"C" = Chevrolet Motor Division
There should be two more letters after the "C" to indicate what vehicle powertrain setup the engine was built for. Take another very close look.
I know that block casting can be tricky to see, but it is back there (refer back to my earlier post). You are looking for a seven-digit raised number that will (most likely) begin with "39". Look down at the driver's side of the block between the rear end of the left cylinder head and the absolute end of the engine block itself. Clean it up really good and use a bright light.
Awaiting the news of your upcoming success.

block casting number 0264 . I found out from a local engine rebuilder that this block is from a 64 passenger car. 63-64 283 195 hp. but this engine has been rebuilt and a few extras have been added 4brl carb, holley manifold some sort or cam (?) . different heads along with different valves. I'm not real happy right now but
I will be getting this down to my mechanic and let him put it on a dyna-testor to find out what this baby can do. I would post some pics, but don't know how. I bought
this car sight unseen from a guy from Ok (barn car) I know the car wasn't original but the car has extensive chrome under the hood and beneath the car. The price wasn't to steep but I'm not sure where to go right now . I might be selling......

Don't be too upset. If it doesn't have enough uumph, just put a crate engine in it. I know 283 sounds bad, but if it runs well, so what? The numbers you list is more power than my stock 75 motor. You can still have a very nice non-matching numbers car. Hey it's still a Vette. If the price was right, enjoy!

Like the man says, "It's still a vette."

And at 195 ponys, that's within 5hp of the 1972 L-48. If you want a crate engine, check out the Engine Factory. SERIOUS mills there, my friend.
