OK, for all you numbers guys, I have a GM Aluminum Vette intake for my '80 and I need to know a couple of things.
1) the numbers on it are #14014432 GM CFM 17
2) it doesn't have the heat shield on it but I have one from another aluminum manifold (badly drilled out bolt hole at the thermostat) that I can cannibalize from
What does the number decode to and does the heat shield make any difference?

You need the shield if you are running the EGR. The shield keeps the engine oil from splashing onto the extremely hot bottom of the intake, were the EGR passages are, and possibly causing a "flash" fire....

Joel;
I'm blocking off the EGR. I wouldn't even change it but the POS engine guy that built this for me put a POS medium rise no-name intake on the car that hasn't ever worked right. I have tried everything, including the metal ruler to check for true and roughing up the surface of the thermo hole, but the bolts back out even with thread locker. I have to tighten them 1/4 turn every 48 hours like clockwork.
Then, even after planing, the carb doesn't seal real well. And finally, the gaskets appear to be leaking (he installed the damned thing) so I'm going back with the L-82 aluminum intake that is coded in this thread.
71Shark and I will stab it after this weekend. We're heading out for an overnight in SE OK for the foliage tour and to eat at Pete's (if you've ever been there, you know where I'm talking about). Best calf fries in the state!
I got the best gasket set I could get from Felpro and the valve cover gaskets that are metal coated with rubber and a new base gasket for the carb. I wouldn't recommend Marks Machine Shop in Nicoma Park OK to any of my ex-wives!!!
We don't appear to have any good engine guys around since the May 3rd tornado took away Auto Machine Supply Co.
Anyways, it sounds like it would be a good idea to pull the shield off the L-82 intake I ruined trying to drill out the bolt for the water neck that sheared.
I don't mean to sound like I'm bitching about having to work on the car, I love that part. But to have to fix up what a "pro" screwed up...

Ya, the shield also helps keep some of the EGR heat from getting to the oil. If yer gonna block it anyway, then it don't really matter, but...it will also help keep hot engine erl off the bottom of the manifold, so the intake charge(air) will be a couple of degrees cooler.

Mike,
My Not Correctly Restored Shark (NCRS) probably should have been a parts car, but she's coming back to life and is a ton of fun to drive!
I have the 4432 with a stripped bolt hole and easy out stuck in it and they look to be the same part, just different coding/marking.

That's my story and i'm sticking to it although I'm usually wrong.
My NCRS Specifications Guide lists p/n 14014432 for all 1980 engines; p/n 14033058 for the 81s.

1981 | 14014432 | 350 | 4 | al |

Probably not a whole lot of difference between the two manifolds.
