Does anyone know the appropriate octane fuel to pump into a stock '78 L82? All the manual states is to use unleaded gas with no reference to octane.

I always use "high test" 91 thru 93 octane in my corvettes, but I believe that you can use unleaded "regular" if you want to .. I just choose not to.

Almost all US cars made in the last 30 years are designed to run on 87 octane or better. If your 78 runs ok on 87 octane,(ie.no pinging),a higher octane rating won't improve anything. Using a hi octane fuel in a engine designed to run on a lower octane gas is like pouring money down the drain. My 75 runs perfectly on the cheapest gas i can find. A friend of mine who used to own 3 gas stations (Shell) said the difference between 5000 gal. of Shell and 5000 gal.of "off brand" is 5 gal.of additives. He also said the station owner makes more profit on "premium" fuels.
