I have a '79 L82.  I was given an oil pan to replace the damaged one I have.  Is there an easy way to tell if the pan needs "thin" or "thick" gasket?  I have a "thin" gasket that I purchased from Summit.  Didn't know that replacing an oil pan could be so complicated.  Thanks.

Usually, you can look at the front of the pan, where it meets up with the timing cover, and tell. If the pan and the cover fit really close, it take the thinner end seal, and if there is a pretty good gap, it takes the thicker end seal.
I believe the '79 stock set-up would use the thicker seal.

Replaced gaskets on both my 78SA and white 79 a month or so ago. Both used thin seals. The PoopBoys guy only had the one piece gasket with thick seals so I went the old fashioned route. Ultra blue sealant matches the Chevy blue perfectly!
