Vette(s): 1971 T-top. I just had car shipped from my parents house in florida where it has sat for over 12 years..It is going to be a long project!
I had my 1971 350 rebuild, the kit came with high volume oil pump. I remember sometime back, I could not find thread, that high volume was not needed. So I put "stock" spring in the high volume so i could use it. Well the problem came when I tried to put oil pan back on...well it did not fit, it seems like the pump itself is hitting pan not the screen, i did not have flash light to make sure but i called summit and they suggested I file pump down..not an option for me. So the question is, mess with returning this pump or on a rebuilt eng. would this high volume be good and I just need to buy a slight deeper pan and new pickup...the is not stock so not to concerned about keeping stock pan, I just want the best performance.

If the engine is in good shape there is no need for a high volume pump. Some high performance or worn out engines will benefit.

The spring only controls the max pressure the pump will produce. Granted, of the max pressure is met the extra oil will just dump back in the pan. No more oil will actually go in the engine unless there is a need. It is nice to have if needed.

The choice is really yours. Filing the pump does not sit well with me, but could be done. I don't know how much or where. The MFG should make it so it works. The deeper pan is an option, but watch your ground clearance.

yeah but is really a downside to high volume pump...

i mean your not going to over pressurize the system with a high vol pump..

with oil pressure ive always felt a little high is better than a little low..

are you sure the oil pan is a correct vette pan..

Yes, the car was parked at fathers house for 13 years with only 70k miles.. I really dont think he changed the pan. Im leaning towards keeping the pump and putting the high imput spring back in and then just getting a different pan and pickup. Any suggestions?

That is one option. With the other spring you will see higher oil pressure. Usually a good thing. Not always. Weak spots can let go, such as pressure sending units and oil gallery plugs. The chances of this are very low. Generally if you want to change the oil pan, this will be a good setup.

shouldnt have any of these weak spots after a rebuild though..

although this would be a good time to replace the oil pressure tube..

check location of screen on pump,this will stop pan from going on if not corect. |hammer|

hi ron nice name by the way ,if your kit came with a high val. oil pump then it will probly need it ,but more than likly your pickup screen needs to be turned up so the pan will fit ! 1 place oil will leak from with a high val. oil pump is the intake bolts but it easy to cure just put some silacon on the bolts and torq. them down to spec. and away you go ,good luck and have fun !! |wavey| |thumb| |cheers|

Thanks to all that answered, I did fix the problem last week. As mentioned it was just the screen and not the oil pump. I put some greese on both the pump and screen and placed pan on and saw where it was hitting. I gave it a little shove |hammer| and on the pan went and on the the next problem I went..
