In a quest for some knowledge on oil pumps I came upon this write-up on Oil Pumps & Engine Lubrication.  I can't speak to its overall "correctness" but in a phone conversation with Zen Master Ken he unknowingly verified several key points in the write-up.

An excellent "primer" article on erl pumps!! Not too techy, but gives all the basic info needed. Thanks, Jim!

(I hate that someone gave away the top secret info on using big block pumps, tho...)
