I have asked quiet a few questions about my car on here lately, but I am just not that familiar with the C3. The Corvette is a 1972 LS5. I would like to know if it has the original engine in it. I was told that it was when I bought it, but you never know. Here are the Numbers. VIN: 1Z37W2S521980 I have found all kinds of numbers on the engine block and the intake manifold but don't understand all of them. On the passanger side on the block there are casting numbers 028 72. On the driver side on the block you can see casting numbers (GM10 T) (CONV 1) and (3999289). At the front of the engine on the block pad there are the numbers (TO504CSS) and (12S521980) On the intake manifold at the back all close to the distributor you can see the numbers, (GMT1) (289758) (D29 72) and (CONV 3) I probably don't know where to look, but I could not find any numbers for the heads. If anyone could help me determine what all these numbers mean, and if I have an original engine, I sure would apprieciate it. Thanks, Jimmie

Hi Jimmie, your block is the original as can be seen by the fact that the vin # is stamped on the left front pad. The casting # 028 72 means it was cast on febuary 8th 1972. GM10T and CONV1 are factory numbers that no one really knows what they mean. 3999289 is the casting # for the block, it will tell you what years it was used. TO504css is the factory production #. TO is for Tonawanda which is the plant where the block was machined and assembled. 504 is a production code. CSS is the suffix code which tells you which vehicles it was used in and the configuration af the engine. On the intake D29 72 is the casting date, April 29 1972. The other #'s are basically useless. You will have to remove your valve covers to find the #'s for the heads. I have a book that has all these numbers and codes and tells what they mean. If you need any further identification, let me know and I will look it up.
|cheers|
Mark

Thanks everybody for your input, that information helps me a lot. This forum has been very helpful to me. As I get to understand the C3 a little more, I should be able to give information back instead of asking for it all the time. Again, thanks for everybody's time in answering my questions. Jimmie
