Anyone out there have any idea how an original LT-1 intake compares to a modern intake like an Edelbrock?? Just to keep it fair, it all has to fit under a stock big block '68- '72 hood with a Holley 650 or comparable carb.
The LT-1 was a potent package but how does it compare to a modern version of the same carburated package? Especially if it involves a high compression engine?

This is my opinion, I don't have all the engineering specs for this answer, but I am sure they are out there.
The snowflake intake is 35+ year old technology. It was used as a performance package along with the Holley carb on an LT1. Was it a better intake that the stock intake, yes. Are there intake/carb combinations out there that will out perform 35 year old technology, YES. I guess it all boils down to what you want to accomplish.

I have always understood the LT-1 intake is excellent. That being said, the LT-1 engine as a whole was a high rpm engine. It lived for the upper rpm range where it makes its best power. A modern intake might move the torque range down to a lower range where you actually drive on the street but give up some upper range performance.
It all depends on what you want out of the engine.

As 6880Mike stated, the LT-1 intake is still considered one the THE best small block intakes ever made. There are other, newer designs that work better in different ranges, as Gunslinger points out. It really does depend on what you want to do, and how you want to drive.

Those who mentioned 35 year old technology are right on. It was on eof the better manifolds of it's time, but the new manifolds will make at least as much power over a broader RPM band.
On the other hand, it is pretty sexy to say you have a correct LT1 manifold. I am still looking for a correct 70 LT1 manifold.

The irony of course is that its 1970 Z-28 intake on a '69 350/350 Vette.

So since its not original would I be better off changing it out for a modern Edelbrock manifold? Granted that the best thing to do would be to change the heads to match (although I do have 2.02 heads) but then thats a REAL can of worms (that ends with buying a C6).
And yes, it is definitely a high rpm package.

If you're building the car for power with other modern parts, there are certainly newer manifolds that match the more modern cam grinds and heads.
Although I've got to tell you, I had a snowflake manifold on a .030 over 350 in a 69 Malibu with stock heads and a comp cams 280H and that sucker screamed!!! I don't know that an Edelbrock or Holley would have made too muck of a difference....
Really comes doew to technology vs leagacy, history, conversation piece that still delivers decent performance......personally, I'd go legacy on a street car

Good luck with whatever you decide
