Removal went pretty smooth with no major hiccups. (A few minor ones). I don't know if anyone has ever used one of the leveling doohickeys shown in the pics but it sure did make the job easier. My friend that loaned it to me (and helped me use it) said it's really helpful for putting the motor back in. He used it to put the motor/bellhousing/tranny in all at once on his '79. (And according to him his crossmember is not removable.) He's trying to talk me into doing it that way on mine - we'll see.

Good shoe Dave!!
That leveling tool is a real good deal if you can borrow one - I used chains and bolts and got her out just the same...

The crossmember on my 79 was held in with 3 bolts on each side - I bought a replacement crossmember that used the same bolt pattern when I did my 700R4 conversion. I don't know if it's different for stick cars, but it's definitely a bolt on for autos...

Great job. I have never seen a leveling doohickey like that one but looks like a winner.

Glad to hear it came out ok. Ive never seen a doohickey like that before either. Very interesting. So what engine is going back in. Hope all goes well.

Thanks, guys. I'm pretty stoked it's out of there. Gonna start tearing her down now - at least get all the junk off - before I take it to a shop.
My current plan is to get that block rebuilt, even though it is just a two bolt. Want to keep the block and other stuff like rods, crank, valves, etc. to save a few $$. .030 over, flat tops, hopefully some porting and shaving for the heads. Comp Cams 268 or 280. Shooting for 9.5:1 compression.
Very interesting about the crossmember thing on the '79. I'll take a look at my buddy's car next time I'm over there to see if there are bolts. In any case, I know he slid the engine/tranny in together with the member installed. He did have a really long cherry picker, though. It was long enough to come in directly from the front with the bumper installed. The one I used yesterday was not long enough to do that. What year did they switch from welded to bolted cross members?

There must be numerous variables between models and years, our '78 auto trans. both have bolt in cross members, as does my '81 4 spd.
