Hey guys,
I just won my distributor on eBay. THe guy who I won it from owns www.batesperformance.com IT Costed me $149.99 MSD Redy to Run Pro Billet. Now all thats left is the coil, and pulleys and the engine can be assembled/painted. MY question is I was going to get the March Chrome Pulley kit, but I don't know if I have to get the 1 groove, or two groove? It is all stock items just about, nothing really special that the belth would have to run through, I'm guessing 1 groove, but I could be wrong.

Thanks guys,
-Louis

The answer in in you engine set up. How many belts do you need to operate all the devices under the hood?

If you just have and alternator and water pump, one groove is fine. Add Power steering and you need two. Add A/C and you usually need three.

This is only if you have the OEM setup. You could even go to a Serpentine belt design. Many options, depending on what acessories you want in the car when you are done.

well how about power steering ??

i wouldnt leave it off unless you go rack and pinion and most people still wouldnt leave it off..

the best case is to get a set with the same number of grooves as the ones you took off.

if your going with standard belts.. if you have an extra groove.. double the belts.. (if you double your belts.. make sure you replace them both at the same time so they will have even wear..)

are your buying a march set for looks or are you getting the underdrive set.. i dont think there is a big (if any) price difference between fancy looking standard pulleys and fancy looking underdrives.. so id go underdrive.

Vette(s): Just finished 2 years of Blood, Sweat, & Tears restoring my 69 Coupe. Crimsom Red, 427, vacuum removed, Shot of Steeroids, Killer Lights, 5 Speed, still working on small things but she is back on the road.
If you still have questions I would suggest you talk to March. I decided to replace my V Belt system with their Serpentine System. I worked with a guy named Rodney. He knew his products and worked with me on what I wanted to do with the 69. His number is 734 729-9070.

Well, I was looking at the power steering pump, alternator, water pump, and they are all singles. The old clutch fan has 3 grooves. um....? I am going to electric fans so I don't need any grooves for the fan. Should I jsut get the single, or do I get a double groove system? I do perfer to keep the MARCH setup I find it to not only look great, but MARCH does a good performance job. I'm just confused about my grooves.

You need 3 grooves on the crank pulley and 2 on the water pump(fan)pulley. Closest groove to the motor: crank, water pump, alternator. Next groove is: crank, water pump, A/C. Farthest forward groove is: crank, power steering (power steering doesn't go to the water pump). That third groove you had on the water pump was probably for a smog pump(smog pump to water pump).
Even with an electric fan setup you'll still need the water pump pulley.

fans dont use belts.. the water pump needs a belt and it drives the fan.. so elctric fans dont affect pulley numbers at all.

also march standard ratio pulleys dont change perfomance one single bit. they look nice but wont give you any better performance than stock. (although they may weigh less... the difference is negligible)

underdrive pulleys from any manufacturer do help performance but you sacrifice something to get it.

I jsut talked to a guy over at Jegs, and he said that I could get part number:
#655-5090 it fits the corvette allpication perfectly. I figured out that sionce the crank pulley is a 3 groove I can funt he power steerign off the water pump, runt he water pump on the crank and the ac on the crank. Since the fans are goign to be electric I dont needto worry about those.
Any suggestions on cheaper prices? they need to be chrome because it is going to be a show car.

V-Belt With Short Water Pump
655-5090 SB-Chevy, Drives W/Pump, Alt., P/S or A/C, Includes 3-Groove Crank, 2-Groove W/Pump and 1-Groove Alt. Pulley $199.99

Thanks guys,

You can't run just the water pump to the crank, you need a third pulley(Alt.?) that has an adjustment available. How else would you tension the belt? Also, the power steering adjustment is sideways, it would be hard to adjust with just the water pump, that is why it runs off the crank. There's a reason for the belts to be layed out like they are.
