I have access to a lift next week and planning to replace leaking/annoying rear main in '73 BB.. Figure I should replace oil pump/strainer/pick-up tube etc. while in there. Any recommendations on oil pump supplier (will take PM's ) seems a bunch of them out there and all diff prices. Not too concerned with price.. just don't want to do it over again. Also thoughts on one piece oil pan gasket. Oh yeah... will I have to prime the oil pump after install?

Yeah, there is a whole lot out there on the market to confuse the issue. When there is any question, I like to play it safe and stick to GM Delco replacement parts. Then you can be sure it's exactly what you need for the application. If you prime the pump before you install you'll be fine (I like to use the extra thick and sticky ass'y. lube) but if you don't feel secure and want to go the extra mile, you can pull the distributor and for $20 you can get a priming rod to run off a drill for priming new motors.

Be sure the tube is secure and the screen isn't loose. You don't want the tube to drop out and you sure don't want the filter screen to fall to the bottom.
Definitely agree with Jimmy on sticking with GM/AC-Delco parts. No 100% guarantee it won't fail, but better chance of it being a correct fit and finish as well as correct spring for pressure, etc.
I used RTV black on my pan and valve covers and have had no issues to date (knock on wood). Never have had too much luck with gaskets, especially on the tranny pan.

FSM specs call for 110 ft lbs for the main caps, 65 ft lbs for the oil pump bolt....
