Edelbrock Performer package
Dual exhaust
Driving along about 2000 RPM the car started to shake got out to look at the new tires and they were OK.

Drove agan and again at 2000 RPM the care shook.
Decided it must be an engine problem so I took off the intake and pulled the rockers, rods and lifters and noticed the lifters were shot. Several were concave and most otheres were pitted and cracked on the surface.
I pulled the engine and stripped it down and it is now at the machine shop getting assessed. I am thinking of ordering the Edelbrock performer package (idle to 5500) - intake, cam kit and heads as I don't do much highway driving. I was going to use the original Q-jet carb - does anyone know the CFM on these?
Does anyone know how much HP and torque this setup should have? I will be really happy with 300 to 350 HP and close to 400 toque.
While the engine is out I am sending the rad out to be checked and re-cored if necessary. I already have all new hoses to go in and have all new engine vac lines to go in as well.
Is there anything else I should be thinking of while the engine is out?
I am also putting in new push rods, water pump, fuel pump, engine mounts and was thinking of headers.
I like the idea of the short style headers- will they fit right onto my standard exhaust at the front connection point?
Thanks in advence

I got the sanderson shorty and they are real close in size to the stock manifolds. I'm pretty sure they will not bolt on to the stock exhaust without doing a little tweaking though. The collector is set a a pretty good angle where if I remember right the stock manifold is fairly level. I think a lot of people on here would recomend going with an MSD type ignition setup as well. I kinda wish I did, but I get stubborn sometimes which is why I still got an HEI.
The original Q-jet was 750cfm.
I am in the process of doing just about the same thing to my 78. I am going with the Edelbrock vortec heads though. I added aluminum roller rockers and am putting headers on it for sure.
Might suggest losing the catalytic converters "accidentally while putting the headers on and run straight true duals.

Heck yeah! Tell ya what if I had it do all over again I would have got the hooker side pipes! I could have paid about the same for them as I did for my headers and exhaust.

I personally prefer to keep stock exhaust manifolds on a Corvette because of the heat and noise. They used 2 1/2" amnifolds on the LT1 and other engines making 370 HP and winding to nearly 7,000 RPM, so they will flow enough.
I agree with the recommendation to use the Vortec heads.

Now is the time to detail the engine bay.
Clean and paint for that new look.

Hi Guys!
Thanks for all the input.
I had the manifolds with the AIR tubes so I was thinking I should at least dump them in favour of headers.
The engine is still in the machine shop (wish they would herry up) I have opted for the Edelbrock performer package as I will not be on the highway or drag strip. Just want a torque monster for around town.
We are somewhat restricted as to the height of the intake so that limits me a little, primarily to the performer series although if I really did some hunting I could probably find another manufacturer.
Thanks again,
Martin
PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS OFFERS A A REAL GOOD INTAKE, COST LESS THAN THE EDLEBROOK AND YOU CAN GET IT POLISHED TOO. I THINK THE TYPHOON WAS THE ONE I HAD, AND I HAD A EDELBROCK 1407 CARB SITTING ON IT. WORKED GREAT. TOOK IT OFF WHEN I DECIDED TO GO WITH THE L-88 HOOD. SO I WAS ABLE TO GO WITH AN AIRGAP INTAKE. AGAIN FROM PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS.

Yep, got a lot of pro products on my engine including an air gap intake. I've been told Low plenum=more torque at lower RPM and Tall plenum=more torque at higher rpm's. I'm not sure how much of this is noticeable at the throttle though.
Vetterbob with the L88 hood and the air gap intake how much room do you have? Oh yeah carb spacer or not? Just curious, I was looking at the 5" high rise hood on ebay but I really want an L88 hood/w air box.

I have the RPM manifold, spacer I think is 3/4 thick but will check tomorrow night when I get home, BG Speed Demon carb, Proform drop base air filter, 2-1/2" K&N air filter and it fits under the stock hood with about 3/8" clearance at the lowest point. Had to use a screw in place of the stud/wing nut to hold the air cleaner on. I had to use a carb spacer so I could use the vac port on the manifold. I think the mid 70's vettes had a little more room under the hood than the late year vettes. Others may be able to confirm that.
