I purchased some Taylor 8mm Spiro Pro Series High Performance Ignition Wires for my 1976 L-48. Well I may sound kinda lame but how do you remove the top part of the distributer cap in order to replace the wires? I do know to replace and match the wires one at a time. Help?

Are you talking about the plastic piece that keeps the wires from coming off?
If so, then if you look carefully at the top of the distributor. There are two thin latches that pop outward with a flick of your fingernail releasing the wire hold down. I think it may even say "latch" on the top.

Yep...the plug wire retaining ring just "snaps" onto the top of the dist. cap. Push outward on the two latches, and it will come up. The wires will also be inserted into the ring, so you'll have to twist/pull them out.
btw...if you look closely at the ring, you'll see that it is numbered at each plug wire hole, so you'll know which wire goes where...as long as the distributer is still in the correct location.Adams' Apple 2007-12-20 06:04:31

Aaron don't feel bad! My new HEI distributor didn't have the ring so I had to figure it out. I got a set of the Taylor wires yesterday and I'm not really enjoying making my own wires too much.

Does anyone have a decent picture of what the plug wires (done up right) at the distributor should look like?
79rebuild, the pictures look real good. Looks like your going first class. Do you still have your website covering the restoration? If so what is it? Thanks

Yeah Glen that looks real nice! I see your AC is on already
Aw I really miss living on the other side of the mountains.

OK, after driving my Vette through the hood on Saturday it started to run a little ruff while at an idle. So I got out the new plug wires and put them on and cleaned the carb up with some carb cleaner spray. She runs real good now. The retainer ring on top of the distributor cap came off real easy but it is in bad shape and cracked, I did not put it back on, do you have to have it on? One of the old wires I took off had rust on the conection at the distributor cap and the overall wires looked to be real old, probably why it ran ruff. I cleaned all the contacts on the distributor cap before putting new wires on. Next I am planning on getting a new MSD red Distributer cap with built-in Coil and Rotor I found for about $30.00 at Schuck's. The end result is I have a nice bunch of red wires (kinda old school look) in the engine compartment and she runs good.
