Took my small block 78 Silver Anniversary to a new mechanic because I had a valve that was sticking.  It was cracked as was two springs.  Replaced all springs and valves.  Told a couple lifters were cracked (bad) as well.  "New" mechanic said it is a good idea that I replace the cam with lifters as well.  

A couple questions:  

1. is that necessary or a good idea?  I've read where it will/can increase HP.

2. Cost to replace the valves and springs and necessary head work was $1100.00, which I thought was a decent price with all parts and labor.  High?  Low? Average?

3.  Did my research on new cam and lifters and saw a couple places, who specialize in C3s, list at about $350.00.  So that appears OK.  But total costs for everything is about $2200.  That's $750 in labor.  Seems a bit steep.  I live in north Georgia where my usual Vette mechanic charges $75/hr.  Should I be concerned?

You think he can do it in less than 10 hours?  Seems reasonable to me.

I'd do some research and find a good modern designed cam that will get a little more low end power.

When I rebuild the 350 in my '75 last year, I put in a Compcams 300+ camshaft and am very happy with it.

If I did it again, I think I would have gone with a roller cam because of the issue of modern oils not having enough phosphorus and zinc to prevent excessive wear in flat-tappet camshafts.

I would definitely go with a roller cam.
