Question: |headscratch|
(easy one for you guys)
Pistons # 1 & 2 have to be replaced. (350) Can one replace only the 2 damaged pistons or is it necessary to replace all 8?

I do not know much (more or less nothing) in this area. Your experiences and answers are highly appreciated.

Thanx!

I would not replace just the two damaged ones. Too many variables...forged or cast, weight of each, compression ratio, bearings, etc. If the pistons aren't matched, you may end up with an engine that doesn't run smooth at the very least.

You're much better off in the long run having the block checked for damage and wear and whether it needs bored or just honed.

I know it will cost money, but will save you grief and even more money in the long run. Get it done right the first time and you won't have to do it a second time.

I looked at buying two pistons from GM when I was rebuilding my motor. They could not guarantee that the pistons supplied would match my other pistons. There were four possible pistons to choose from and they would have to be ordered at about $80 each with no return. My car is a '76 L48. Instead I installed some aftermarket flat top pistions and have not regreted having the extra compression. As mentioned earlier, there are way too many variables. It is best to have a matched set of pistons.

Thanx guys!

The block has to be replaced, as the one piston that went through it destroyed it.

There are so many variables! I thougth computer programming was complicated.

Hello,

Since you will have the pistons out of the block you will be able to find a part number on the inside of the piston. This will get you a match.

However, you will probably be better off getting a master rebuild kit from someone like Summit Racing or Jegs since you will probably have to machine your replacement block.

An easier, more cost effective alternative are the GM crate motors. Everything from the Goodwrench replacement long block around $1200 to the ZZ502 at over 500 hp and rip your face off torque for $8500 and up. Look into it.

I put a ZZ-4 and just love the performance. Best $3500 I have ever spent.

Just to let you all know - MY BABY IS ON THE ROAD!!!!

I am in heaven. After the incident happened last year (5 October), nearly nothing was done by Mr. X Mechanic.
We had words, I moved my baby to a new mechanic.
The new mechanic spent only two and a half weeks on my baby and I got it back yesterday (29 Jan) - BLISS (which is also the registration number)

I have kept the old parts for educational purposes - now I have some examples to work from.

Well - I am content!!!!!

Greetings,
