I'm planning to rebuild my Q-Jet soon by my self.
Regarding the finish I was reading a lot regarding paint and also about that rebuilders in US will do a replating.
On the carb I don't like to go with paint, but around here the companies, which do replating don't really have expirience with such carbs.
Are there any risks during the replating like clogging something or can they handle the parts "as usual"?
Does someone have some pics how the finish of a correct rebuild Q-Jet looks like with all the other parts on it?

I would be very careful about getting your carburetor refinished. The finish is not really a "Plating" where metal is electro-chemically attached. It's just a chemical treatment that converts the surface of the metal to a more corrosion resistant oxide. I would be afraid that the plating company you choose might "Etch" the metal to prepare for a new treatment. And that can make holes larger and leave residue inside small passages.
I suggest you contact Lars and ask him for advice. Or better yet, send him the carb and have him restore it for you. Just send him text, no pictures.

BIP is in Hungary...shipping to/from there might be a pain.
Seems like I read something recently that had to do with reconditioning the outer surface of carbs, making them look "new". Of course....I can't remember where the heck it was I saw the article, but I'll dig around and see if I can find the info.

Yes I'm in Hungary and the shipping to and back can be a pain.
Reconditioning the surface would be a great alternative. Joel, hope you will find that article.
tx and regards

Did some additional deeper research and came across Alodine 1201
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/alodine1201.php
To that product I found for example the following post on a Ford forum:
"Clean carbs, media blast, air blast clean, dip in Aldine for 30 sec., dip in clean water wash, Slow air dry......You end up with a green/gold finish...."
Joel, maybe this is the reconditioning you were thinking about.
Does someone know this Aldolin and used it before?

Don't recognize the product name, but the process sounds pretty much the same. Just remember, the only thing you would ant to "dip" on a Quadrajet would be the main body, and the top. The bottom, or base plate should be bare/natural aluminuminum.
Might be worth a try, if a quart is only $30. It states a quart will cover 100 square FEET.....that's a LOT of carbs!

It seams this Alodine stuff is quite nasty and even contains chrome VI.
So it is quite impossible to get it here, especially as a private person.
Painting is still a no go for me. Before I would paint it (like with Eastwoods Carb Renew) I would leave it as it is.
I will continue searching for an alternative or a rebuilder here in Europe to get back that original finish as close as possible.

Peter, I emailed you the article I had on carb restoration. It is a Holley carb, but the process, and coloring is pretty much the same. Let me know if that helps you any.
