What it means in a nut shell is hat it is a non-original motor that someone is trying to make look like it is original.
Assume that the price should reflect a NOM type car.
Hope that helps.

For alittle clarification. If the seller is trying to pass the car off as a numbers matching car. He had better have documentation from the engine builer that he is in fact the one that decked the motor, he should have pictures of the original stamping, then more pictures of the cleaned off block after decking, then numbers stamped back into the block. All this still may not be enough to get it past a "hard core" buyer, but it would be a great help. Now if he is trying to sell it as a big block vett with a original size motor, in case being the correct type block but NOT the correct numbered block for the car. For all you know it could have been out of a Chevelle, but is the correct CID and style. Hope this explains abit more.

If you are interested in a numbers matching Vette, you are also going to wnat to verify the build dates cast in to all the engine components. All of the engine assemblies must be dated before the car's build date.
Checks the dates on the block and heads as well as the casting numbers. Heads and block should have dates usually within 30 days unless it is a real rare combo like L88 where they only cast the heads one or maybe two times ever. If you need help contact NCRS inasmuch as I am not sure what the actual casting numbers should be.
Sounds like you have an honest seller.

Hats off to the seller for actually stating that the engine is a re-stamp....
BUT it still is a NUMBERS MATCHING CAR.... ask your local NCRS Judge... they allow restamps ! go figure...
Another reason (If you are into "correct" cars) to demand
AND GET documentation...
Personally I am not into "correct cars". I like those I can drive and enjoy so I would NOT be bothered in the least.
JUST make sure you DO NOT PAY a premium for the car because the numbers match... only pay a premium for fully documented cars...

Some enthusiasts in the Corvette hobby are very passionate about numbers matching. The matching numbers do not make it run any better and no mention is made of the price. The seller was up front about the numbers and there are many re-stamped big blocks out there who are not. If you are not shopping for a NCRS show car, but a good driver, better to focus on condition and price IMO. At the right price, a rebuilt BB could be more fun than a matching number car because you will not be afraid of driving it. Good luck with which ever you choose.
