New idee on my "what did i wrong"....
Just to be sure , if you put your distributor with timing light on the O mark running , so no static advance, and afterworths put your engine on the O mark, WHERE is your rotor pointing ? At the #1 towerpin center , a few( how many ? ) degrees after or before ?
I was just thinking about this today , because most think just in center , but with mechanical advance taking 20 to 26° depending on the equipment installed, why should the rotor NOT fire the previous cylinder as his towerground , 45° before , is now becoming closer .... ????? I see on my NEW installed ACCEL performance distributorcap already some either burning in or metal built up on the inside plug grounds on the advance side of the brass pins.
Sorry if i'm toooo theory-t'cle ( ) but it's a HOBBY !
Sorry ladys and gentleman , this is , YES , page 9 ....
With balancer set to 0 degrees, the rotor will be close to zero. When it is set at the desired timing, say 12 degrees advanced, the rotor will be even closer. At this point the distributor points should just start to open. For those with electronic, the pickup will be in direct line up with the reluctor.
When you have mechanical advance, the rotor does not line up dead center. Too much total advance will cause a large gap, causing problems.
Any arcing will create burn/wear on the cap and rotor contacts. This is normal wear.
To answer the question, no they don't line up the rotor with the cap tower until some advance is achived. Other wise, just as you guess, the car would fire the wrong cylinder. There is a balance of rotor position between base timing and full advance.
