Do you think it is in the cars and my best interest to remove all or a majority of its smog equipment, and if I do what would the best way of going about it i.e. items to remove and items to keep. As I understand Califronia Law, after a car reaches 30 years old, it no longer requires semi anual smog inspections. If any one good point me in the right direction on this decsion, please respond.

You better check for sure of California law so you don't run afoul of it. I understand they can be real Nazis about such things.
In Maryland where I live, once a car reaches 25 years it qualifies for "historic" registration status, and is exempt from emissions testing, though the downside is use of the car is restricted to low mileage per year and primarily shows, parades and such.
For the record, my '78 runs much better without the smog equipment.

What you keep and what you pitch has more than just a little to do with your "big picture" plans for (A) the engine and (B) the car. If you're looking to shoehorn a blown 502 into an '82 engine bay, somethings gotta give.
Of course, what is the point in modding an engine for performance if it is going to be stifled by Mr. Smog Pump & friends?
A little more info on what you want out of your powerplant would be helpful.
As to the effect on the car itself? One simple point to remember: A car is only original once - PERIOD! What is the value of originality to you as the owner?
INPUT! INPUT! INPUT!

if you take the smog EQ off.. just make sure to put any pieces you can into those giant zip lock bags.. mark the bags and keep them someplace where they wont get thrown away..
if you sell the car.. ask the buyer if he plans to resto. if so give him the parts you removed.. if he plans to hot rod it.. then keep the parts and sell them to someone who is doing a resto.
a car that isnt original but comes with functional original parts is just as good if not better..
however on that note.. I thought CA required all post 67 to have smog control..
Maybe you should be environmentally conscious and leave it all on...

I know the limit is 25 years for FEDERAL cars. California goes back futher, 67 may be right. Do you homework first.

im pretty sure about the post 67 rule...
you dont get any break based on age.. the car MUST meet emissions standards of the day on all post-67 cars in CA.
and judging by the air quality when I lived there (1999-2000)... they need it

In calif its 30 years for rolling emissions-test exemption,Ca. state assy woman Sally Lieber a liberal #*&@# democrate has reintroduced A.b. 2683 that would repeal the 30 year exemption and require permanent testing of 30 years or newer. So if you are from Ca. better get on the phone and call your so called political leaders and and oppose A.B. 2683, as for the smog stuff, if you pull it better keep it close by if you car is 30 years or newer.

Well, I just recently purchased the car, and to restore to origanal would not be possible due to a new motor droped in about 500 miles ago. So I thought, why not have a little fun with it. My plans is not to make it a 500 HP monster, but to open up its breathing (dual exhaust)and have a better carb/spark system than what is currently installed. I would like to get it to the 250-300 HP range. I am in the process of getting my headers ceramic coated for the first step, and looking into purchasing a dual free flow exhaust, and actively seeking a holley 600 carb. I have a bunch of other little things I have to fix at the same time. I have taken off the smog pump. When I did, it seemed my gas miliage went to hell. (any sugestions). I must also point out my vacuum hose post. Could I have messed that up? The car still idles nicely, and the open air ports that are no longer used, were caped off. Adventuaully as I become more familiar with the car, I will be satisfied with the car and the progress I made
One more thing..Any tips on cooling down the inside. it gets really hot with the tops on. No A/C. I'm looking into putting down heat blankets. Anything else you can do?

Hope it helps.

PS - Beautiful car. But, could you shrink the billboard a little, please? Thanks.
