I bought my '76 Vette on saturday. It needs a few things. The engine has been rebuilt and sounds great. Rev all you want and no smoke. The other day I was entering a highway using the clover-leaf on ramp and was checking out the Gymkhana suspension. All of a sudden it looked like I was a plane being shot down! There was blue smoke pouring out of the back end. I thought I toasted the engine. Once on the highway I pulled over to the shoulder and slowed down...no smoke. I booted it, again no smoke. Reved the engine...no smoke. On the way home same thing happened on the ramp as the car was turning right for about a 1/4 mile...blue smoke. A local engine shop said it could be that oil is getting sucked in by the Pvc (which is on the right side). Is that the problem? How can I stop it? Thanks.

Is there a baffle still spot welded on the back side of the valve cover were the PCV plugs into? Pull the PCV hose off and see if there is any heavy amounts of oil residue. Also check the breather on the other valve cover.

I just checked the PVC. I can see that there is something in front and back of the PVC. The valve also had a little oil film on it but not what I'd call excessive. Of course I haven't driven it today (rain).
Also there is an oil plug on both chrome valve covers. My toy for the last 27 years has been a 455 equipped Olds 442 and there is only one place to pour oil. This Corvette is my first Chev - do they usually have two oil locations?

Ken,
Most chevy engines had one oil filler opening. The really early smallblocks had a filler tube up by the front of the intake, like Olds had on their engines. The later to present SB has a oil filler cap on either the left or right valve cover.
So if you have 2 plugs in the covers, you need to remove one of the plugs and put in a breather (opposite side of the PCV.) This prevents excessive internal pressure buildup in the engine. Which in turn can shove oil up to the top end allowing occasional smoking. Try it out and let us know how you make out.

Thanks Sarge,
I'll pick up a breather tonight. It's supposed to be sunny and warm here for the Labour Day long weekend - I'll try it out and see what happens. Thanks for all your help, have a great long weekend.
