Has anyone out here heard and or experienced any undesired results by using a "two quart" oil filter on thier 350 CID? I have pleanty of ground clearance in this area, so ripping it off is unlikely. Just wondering if the added capacity would be benificial.

I have a case of WIX 51794 small block Chevy truck filters I'd like to put to good use on my 72.

Thanks,

JB

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as you have plenty of ground clearance and add the appropriate amount of additional oil I don't see a problem. The oil in an engine actually carries away a great deal of heat from the internal moving parts so greater filter capacity and additional oil would logically help keep the engine cooler...how much is arguable.

I can't see it causing a change in engine oil pressure as that's a function of the oil pump which isn't changed and the level of oil in the pan and the size of the oil passages.

I know other GM divisions have had long and short oil filters for their cars...the only difference is the clearance for the particular application...the fit is the same otherwise.

I'd be interested in hearing the opinions of others as well. Maybe someone knows of engineering studies that can shed light on the issue.

I found this info on the WIX site. Pick the ALL APPLICATIONS to see that this filter is for truck use, however I don't see a downside to using on a Corvette provided ground clearance is not an issue?

It seems the larger filter has a higher nominal micro rating, higher burst pressure-PSI than the filter specified for the 350CID Corvette shown below. Other than that they are nearly the same.

Cost is around 12.00 USD for the 51794, however a Race Only? filter (add an "R" after the P/N) {51794R} costs around 23.00 USD which obviously has a lot less actual filtering capability than the street version.

The longer filter will work just fine. I use one on my '74 when it's not being judged.
On some applications with headers, it may be too close to the exhaust to be safe, but, other than that, and the aforementioned ground clearance, it will work.

I use the longer truck filter on my vette.  I have used them on other vettes and camaros in the past.  I like having the extra filtering capacity.  I have never had a clearance problem, even with headers.
