Hey all,
Hopefully someone has seen this before. I have a '79 L-82. The car was running fine and then I put a set of headers and sidepipes on it. Ever since when you put the car into gear it will drop to about 400 rpm and stall out. This is with the idle cranked up to 1000-1100 rpm.
I just had it in the shop where the carb was replaced, and the lifters and timing was adjusted. It now runs even worse. The mech. said I had lower compression on 3 and 8 but I can't beleave it would occur that quickly. Any thoughts?

Replaced the original air cleaner with an edelbrock but all vacum lines are accounted for. The car had headers on it when I bought it with standard pipes/mufflers out the back. I put a set of Hooker headers and pipes back on.

When they were down near the transmission putting the hea
ders on, is it possible they disconnected an electrical wire going to the transmission? Its possible that when you put it in gear, the electronics are searching for something and not getting it, therefore shutting everything down. I'm not familiar with your year, so this is just a guess.

I actually put the headers on myself so that is sure a posibility. A buddy of mine was also thinking about maybe the vac. modulator on the tranny. Maybe?

I doubt that its the vacuum mod. on the trans. There is not enough vacuum at idle to make it operate. It operates off of manifold vacuum while driving to tell the trans when to shift. Putting headers on would have no effect. Especially if it was running fine before you took into the shop. Sounds like the shop got something wrong.

My questions are, when you put the edelbrock on, does that mean you swaped out the manifold? If so you may have a vacuum leak at the manifold.

Secondly, what did they do to adjust the lifters. IF they are Hyd. Flat Tappets, there are no adjustments, unless you mean they adjusted the rocker arms to adjust how the pushrods are seating in the lifter.

If you changed lifters without changing the cam, I would say you have knocked a lobe off the cam and there is your problem. Can you clarify what they did to the valve train. If they have it out of adjustment they may adjusted them to loose or to tight. To tight and you may be hanging a valve open all the time which will cause a loss in vacuum and cause the engine not to run correctly.
