I understand the heat soak problem and I've always had it but in my research I've heard alot of people talking about a "mini starter". What is a mini starter and what's the difference ? Where do you get one ?

Do the starter heat shields that Mid America, etc. sell work?

Thanks!

Its just that mini or smaller.  It places the starter down and away from the engine/headers.  Hitachi style starts are very popular upgrade.

Here is a popular aftermarket company that makes various forms.

I just got one of their new XS Torque style starters.  Have not installed it yet.

Many of the mini starters are a gear reduction setup.

That makes the starter motor spin faster for the same cranking speed.  This allows the starter motor to pull less amperage, and at the same time supply more torque to turn the engine.  Both very good things.

And yes, any heat sheild will help.

Well, not just like the MOPAR starters.  They were gear reduction with offset gears, and actually took up more space.  These mini starters use a plantary gear set so the motor is in line with the starter drive, and they take up less space.  They are also a lot quieter than the old MOPAR starters.

Sorry Joel, But I like the old MOPARS.  Loved my 71 Dart.
