Topic: Starter woes again
in Forum: C3 Engines
I drove the 'Vette yesterday. When I went to restart it again (hot), it wouldn't start. This will be the third time I've had to have the starter rebuilt. Last time I tried to buy a new one at several auto parts stores, but mine was different than anything they had. Mine is the original, it has an iron snout instead of aluminum, and it was a different length (I don't remember if it was longer or shorter, but it was 1/8"-1/4" different). The first time I didn't notice the difference and tried to bolt a new one in, but I think it was too long (if I remember right). I'm tired of the continued problems and would like to purchase a new style smaller unit. Anybody run into this?
P.S. I have a 350 TH400.
Thanks,
Matt
I had problems just like you describe when I purchased my vet. Went to a mini-starter & haven't had a problem since. Jeg's or Summit have good selections.

I think if I get a new starter I'll probably have to shim it. What's the max amount you should have to shim a starter?
Thanks,
Matt

There is also a possibility that there is a voltage drop from the ign. switch to the starter. You don't really want to keep replacing the starter, if that's not really the problem.

btw......if you do get a diff. starter, KEEP the old one, or at least the nose(cast iron). Those are getting hard to find, and we are seeing a problem getting a correct starter for 'Vettes w/cast-iron noses.
