Well, I just set the timing on my 383 because it's been running funny. Looked a bit off. I set it according to a lot of writeups, 16 initial and 36 after centrifugal. I also moved my vacuum advance from port vacuum to manifold vacuum as the writeup suggested.
My main question is this: I have a HEI dist, it had black/gold springs in there as it was. My problem was with that combo it was opening at my idle speed of ~750. I changed it to black/black but now it's taking till about 3500 to come all in, where the writeup says it should be all in by 2500-3000 for best performance. Is what I have now acceptable, or what can I do to get it to come all in from OVER 750 but before 3000?
Btw no pinging or anything, car is running great if not better than before.
Thanks
-Josh

What springs are you using to get the centrifugal advance all in above idle and below 3000?

Is gold medium or light?
A good baseline is a set of medium springs and depending on how soon you come up on full advance, you can lighten up if it's taking longer than you expect of go to the heavier springs if coming on too soon.
Depends a lot on your driving habits...
