Yes, I ordered the recommended manuals. I'm just not so good at waiting when there is work to be done. My 78 temp gauge is not working and it appears to be because I cannot find a temp sending unit attached to the engine. Anyone got a pic of where it should be and the wire?

Hi Valentine,
I found my 82's coolant temp sensor just below the return coolant hose nozzle where the thermostat is housed. I drained the coolant to below that level and swapped the sensor out. It was pretty easy to get to and was available at my local parts store.
Your 78's may be in another location. I don't know. There are at least two types - one wire or two wire. I always use anti-seize compound.
Maybe some of the other guys will chime in about troubleshooting the indicator. I'm pretty sure that it is a resistive circuit with a voltage drop developing over the meter coil.

The temp sending unit on the '78 should be in one of the heads....usually on the driver side, between the front two plugs. The wire is normally green in color. If you do not see anything on the driver side head, look between the two REAR plugs on the passenger side.
The temp sensor in the thermostat housing has more to do with controlling the fuel injection and timing on the '82.
