The good news is I replaced the valve cover gaskets on the LT-1.
For someone with my mechanical ability, this was a big deal.
Started the car, so far no leaks and it doesnt look like I broke anything else while replacing those.
Whew.

The bad news.
Decided while I was in there to polish up the chrome stuff. This was going great.
Took off the air cleaner cover and polished that also.
Then poped off the air cleaner and WHAT!!!

On the pan the air cleaner sits on they had cut, with tin snips, a piece out of the bottom of it so it would go over some valve deal off the left side of the Eldenbrock carb. (Left side looking at the car from the front.)
There is some wire going into the bottom of said valve deal.
I am like "WTF"!
There is no way the air cleaner can be working 100% as the dang air cleaner itself doesnt even have room to fit all the way in and around said valve deal.  It comes close but there has to be a small gap there.(I am driving it anyway. Larry had it for 6 years or so and I know he didnt know of this.)

Sooo, is there another carb that will fit on the intake with a whole pan?
I have all the original heads, intake and carb that came stock on the car in a box.
I am guessing the heads were replaced when the unleaded fuel came out.
The heads that are on it are 0-12367712. GM PP Zues 1929. (Or 1829, couldnt really see if it was a 8 or a 9).

Thanks for listening....

Whoa Trigger slow down.....John there has got to be another aftermarket air cleaner that will fit around the top flange of the carb that is on the car now. Just change out the air cleaner if nuttin is wrong with the carb.

At least that's where I would start.......Evil Smile

Vette(s): White '79 Corvette. It's a driver.
After having a similar problem with an aftermarket air cleaner not quite fitting right, I was able to acquire a ( Thanks again, DaveM!!! ) genuine Chevrolet open sided air cleaner.
Problem Solved!
I'm hoping this is an easy fix for you.

Thanks for the responses. I was just REALLY frustrated.

I dont want to loose the cool "370 HP" chrome top on the cleaner.
Thats why I thought about going to the carb rather than loosing the stock appearance of the engine.

I know a trained eye can tell that the heads are different and I dont have the ribbed cross flags on the valve covers.

So let me ask this, what is that little deal on the side and can I just take it off?

Is it a choke or what?

Again, thanks.

Vette(s): had a really nice one. sold it to a good friend. Purchased 2004 custom coupe in Feb. 2009 did not tell anyone here until August 2009. BAD I KNOW.
Jt I had no idea when they put the carb on that they retro fitted the air cleaner base, the reason i went with the carb change was due to the fact that i had no choke.  if you find an after market air cleaner you could afix a 370 hp sticker onto it and then find a stock air fitler base that has not been cut on to add to your stock part box
Sorry dude go to see you the after day

I have retrofit several aftermarket air cleaners to clear the accelerator pump.  Mine has been that way since 1993 with no ill effect that I am aware of.  Maybe if you were on dirt roads all the time you might have an issue.  It does depend on how big the space is.  The right one from GM is sometimes hard to find and really expensive.

Me thinks the original heads are going to see some hardened valves seats real soon. Thats the best answer right now.
I have the heads, intake and carb that will solve all the problems and keep the stock look because, well, it will be stock!

Larry, just wondering who did the work?
Really, they took tin snips and just cut a hole in the cleaner pan that allows air to come up from inside the air cleaner ring. I was like wiping a booger on the Mona Lisa!

I know you didnt know of this. I love the car!!!!!

My guess the valve thing you speak of on the right side of the Edel. carb viewed from the drivers seat is the electric choke housing, stock chevy Q- J or Holley carbs us a Divorced style choke setup that doesn't get in the way of the air cleaner like the old style new elec. Edel. choke housing, stock or after market dropped open air cleaner base's will not clear the Edel elec. choke unless you run Edel. part # 8092 which is a 3/4" plastic spacer that  sits between the top of the carb and the bottom of the air cleaner base,  if you have the LT-1 hood you might not have clearence issues, did you check the clearence with Silly Puddy like I suggested?   anips2009-06-05 16:18:11

Joe, now thats the kind of help I can use!!!!

Now I didnt see anything about silly puddy and checking clearance in a previous post.

Can you elaborate?

I am guessing I just put silly puddy on the top of the air cleaner and close the hood.
Then measure the clearance?

I am going to have to buy a new housing as they just butchered the one in there.
