I have a question about setting up the timing on my vette. I just
installed a new intake, roller rocker arms, shimmed the end on the distributor for proper
end play, cleaned the weights and advance mechanism, and installed a
missing bushing on the advance pin.
Now I have the distributor back in the car and checking the timing. I am using a dial back timing light that has always been on the money. Now it is telling me I am idling at 30 degrees, if I rev the motor it goes off scale. My question is, could I be off one post with my wires making me see this kind of numbers? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have a few pics of the work I did that I want to submit to the do it yourself thread.

I agree...with that much advance, it would be extremely hard to crank the engine over, and probably impossible when hot. That's too much actual(total) advance even at 3000rpm, much less at idle. Check which plug wire you're on.

I am on plug one. I was just thinking I may have the wires one post off
on the cap. Would that give the readings I am seeing. The car fires
instantly and runs smooth.

That would do it! Are you getting 30 degrees with the vacuum advance plugged off I assume?

Luke, you are correct. I was just trying to set it up for mechanical
advance of 36. Cool. My next move was going to be move the wires one
post and see if that would get me back in line. I was just wanting
someone to confirm with me. I will post back and let you know how
it goes. I pulled the distributor again tonight for a new bushing on
the advance pin again. The temp one I installed was plastic, I ordered
a new brass one. It arrived today. Should have it all installed
Saturday.
Got the new brass bushing installed and set the timing. I have 36
degrees centrifugal, all in by 3000 RPM. I have 18 at idle with no
vaccum attached. I did not check what the vaccum can would pull yet but
I think I am ok with the can I have. It is a B1 can and close to stock.
I will check it tomorrow and see where it advances me to.
I believe I am set. Tomorrow I am going to take it out for a spin and see just how it runs. Should be pretty good.
