Good news.... bad news...............................

Good news: Well got her all back together.

Bad news: No firing, spitting fuel out carb... ahhhh!

Spark checked good, pulled both valve covers, 4 broken off push rods and 1 bent. Ahhhhhhh!!!!!

Well time to gain some HP.... now I need to decide, rebuild or crate. I am leaning back towards rebuild of mine since I am limited on storage space.

Thank everyone for the advise to this point. I am sure I will have allot more questions as I move forward.

Bummer, for sure, Bernie. Sorry to hear that about the engine. Why not just replace the pushrods, and go from there?

Yes, by all means replace the push rods and see what happens.  One good over rev can bend the rods.  You may find the engine is fine once the push rods are in, valves adjusted, and perhaps a new set of plugs.

So to check further, I should pull the intake and see if I can get the rods out? find all of the parts/pieces? for some rods there is no push rod extending to the rocker arm, it is broke right at the head edge. Will I need to pull the heads too? I don't mind spending the time if there is hope, but I have so little spare time I don't want to waste it if the probability is low for sucess.

There is a great deal of hope.  Yes, you may need to pull the intake.  There will be no need to pull the heads.

wouldn't there have been valve to piston contact to make the pushrods break???? I'd pull the heads or at least borrow a borescope to look around the combustion chamber. You could have bent valves or cracked pistons too.

There should be no piston/valve contact on any Chevy small-block(stock), It's pretty much impossible, unless the cam/rocker ratio has been change to some outrageous lift, or the valve adjustment is way too tight.

Or maybe a 8000rpm missed shift...oops

Bernie, I'm in the same boat. No spare time. My 'Burban has been sitting for almost a year, waiting for the time to pop the heads, and fix a valve.
I would absolutely pull the intake, gather all the shrapnel, and replace the pushrods, before condemning the engine.Adams' Apple38829.3049305556

I'm with Joel, a Chevy small block almost NEVER touches a valve to a piston.   If you are worried about it, just get a connector to fit a spark plug hole, or a leak down tester, and put air in the cylinders.   Make sure each piston is on a compression stroke.  If you have a bent valve air will come out of the intake or exhaust.  If it does not leak, no valve damage.

OK I will first see if all the pieces come out the top, if I can't find all the pieces, pull the intake and account for all the pieces.

Question: change all rods whether damaged or not? Anything I should do or not do while loosening the rocker arms up. Loosen, slide to the side, pull the rod? Insert new rod, read manual for adjusting valves.

Intake, read other sticky post on intake removal and replacement.

I would replace all of the rods.  They are not that expensive, and with several damaged, it's not worth the chance of leaving a slightly damaged rod, only to have it fail later.

Get the rockers out of the way any way you like.  But if you take them off, make sure to keep the same pivot balls with the same rockers.

And then yes, follow the valve adj procedure.
