ALCON, still working on rear diff and lug nut to lug nut replacement of rear. Now about everything has been replaced or repaired except the engine has not been rebuilt and is originial L-48. It runs strong and I really have no problems with it other than a occational puff of smoke when you frist start it. (Valve Guides I know). So my question is before it goes to paint shop should the engine be redone even if I'm happy with it? Just need a little advise here. I have always though if it an't broke don't fix it. Any Ideas, Thanks
Guy

Really depends on what you want down the road Guy (no pun intended!!
) I always make paint and body last on the list.

Why paint and get everything aligned to just start yanking the hood off and on and swinging engine blocks over fresh paint!!
In terms of the engine, is running strong enough for you? The puff of smoke can only get worse over time...Depending on the miles and if the rings are still holding, I would possibly freshen up the heads and maybe go to a mild performance cam, new double roller chain, roller rockers, lifters, pushrods, maybe a performer manifold and rebuild the carb or upgrade.
Did this on a 69 Malibu 350 several years ago and what a difference it made! Did it for about $700 at the time...
All of this can be done without yanking the block out of the car....
Just my 2 cts.....
Good luck whatever you decide...

Paul, thanks for the imput. I'm thinking along the same line as you are. I retire in 5 years and the 75 is goining to AUS with me. Really the engine just puff smoke at start-up everyonce and a while. But your right why wait for that big boom al of a sudden. I think I will do the rebuild your talking. By the way I'm a OIF vet myself. There in 04 still in US Army now just hit 32nd year too. Oh 101st A A qualified to. Thanks for the information.
