I'm installing a new oil pan in my 68 427BB and wanted to know what should I torque the bolts to? and does it change with the one piece (thicker) gasket.

According to my 68 Chev. service manual, oil pan to crankcase 80 lb. ins. , oil pan to front cover are the same at 80 lb.-ins.  Good luck-Flandy

Devide the ins. # number by 12 to arrive at a ft. # equivilent, so it wouls be just shy of 7 ft. #'s

by the way..  the bols are not measured by head size..  they are measured by shaft thickness.

in general..  most of the sizes under 1" are usally 3/16' smaller than the wrench needed to turn the bolt.

so the 7/16 and 1/2 you referenced are actually 1/4 and 5/16

from experience, DON'T OVERTIGHTEN, breaking one of those suckers off in the block is bad news.

If you don't have the inch pound torque wrench here is another method.

Run all the bolts down to contact. Snug them up evenly, a little bit at a time.  Watch the gasket on the side of the oil pan.  When you see the gasket start to compress, stop turning.   If you go too far, the gasket will split and leak.  Too little, and the gasket will leak.
