Hey guys havent posted anythkng in a bit but wanted to ask a question fro some of you exhaust experts, i took my 81 to the exhaust shop today and had true dual exhaust put on it 2 1/5 pipe I left the mufflers it had on it on for the time being thats another load of cash for another day, but they are nothing special reg aluminized oval mufflers, when i told the guy at the shop (whom Ive done some buisness with and rust) that I wantd to make sure that we installed a crossover pipe and he said there was really no need and that it wouldnt help that much... he also stated that on most new cars that have duals they dont even use them anylonger?? true? my vette sounds much better what kinda horspower increase should I get ? im sure it will be minimal but just curious, also i know the right hi performance mufflers will probably help as well huh? thanks for any input vettehead1963

I had true duals installed on my '78 and eliminated the converter. A mechanic I trust who did the work felt it must have freed up 20 horsepower doing so. It runs much better, no question. Performance mufflers will help when you have some installed.

As far as a crossover, I haven't seen any Vette installations with them, but they do help on other cars. The crossover tends to balance exhaust pulses between the two heads and makes for smoother tuning and better power. How much I don't know but I have seen comparisons and the difference is measureable. I have a '67 Dodge Charger with duals and a crossover, and the system was designed that way. I have Flowmaster mufflers installed with it, and I've had people tell me it sounds better than my Vettes. With todays engines with fuel injection, multiple cams and computer controls, crossovers are likely not needed since everything is controlled so precisely, or simply not cost effective.

I agree with Gunslinger. I had the crossover installed with my dual exhaust on my 75 and it does help to balance the pulse and the sound is great. I haven't even put on headers yet and everyone comments on the sound.

Right on the money. It does make a difference in sound and performance. The performance may or may not be noticable, but it's there. It can mess around with computer cars due to the oxygen sensor set up. But will not be a negative on any C3 due the the computer system at that time.

I've heard anywhere between 20-40 hp if you add headers and free flowing mufflers. I've noticed a real difference in mine. |thumb|

Hey thanks for the anwers guys it feels like it has a few more ponys under the hood, and i think when i get my new mufflers I will have him put the crossover in it will be a short one only about 3" because the pipes run so close together where the converter once was but it will have to do... Thanks again vettehead1963
